Russian President Vladimir Putin said goodbye to Gorbachev on September 1 and will not be able to attend his funeral due to his work schedule, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Mikhail Gorbachev was the last General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee. In this position, in 1985, he announced perestroika, which was a set of political and economic reforms aimed at democratizing Soviet society. Gorbachev is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of the Gorbachev Foundation, which studies perestroika, as well as Russian and world history.
