Von der Leyen promised to organize a videoconference with regional players “to strengthen regional cooperation in the field of oil infrastructure”.

The Hungarian side also reported that the European Commission and Budapest have made “some progress” on the issue of sanctions against the Russian oil sector. As stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, “we can talk about a small step forward.”

“However, much more needs to be done so that in the future we can change our position,” he clarified.

Hungary refuses to support the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil supplies to the European Union. Szijjarto explained that the ban would undermine the security of the country’s energy supply and its economy. “Of course, we will not allow this, because we cannot allow anyone to destroy the results of the many years of efforts of the Hungarian people, our selfless work,” the minister said.

He also claimed that Budapest would not vote for the sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia, which is planned to include an embargo in its current form. According to the minister, Hungary stands for exceptions to the embargo on the import of crude oil through pipelines.

In turn, Secretary of State for International Relations in the Office of the Prime Minister of Hungary Zoltan Kovacs noted that the EU has not developed any plan to preserve the energy security of EU members and does not give any guarantees.
