The Mayor of Prague took the initiative to take the title of honorary citizen from Konev. The opposition called this decision “a hysterical attempt to rewrite history”

Deputies of the City Council approved the deprivation of the title of honorary citizen of Prague of the Soviet commander and Marshal Ivan Konev, who received it in 1946, the newspaper Ceske Noviny reports.
The chairman of the opposition party of deputies YES, Ondrej Prokop, called such a decision a “hysterical attempt to rewrite history.”
The proposal to deprive Konev of the title was made by the Mayor of Prague, Zdenek Grzyb, on May 6. In his opinion, the act of awarding the title of honorary citizen should be considered “in the modern context and taking into account the further development of Czechoslovakia”. Among the reasons, the mayor pointed out Konev’s decision to bomb Mlada Boleslav on May 9, 1945 and his participation in the suppression of the Hungarian uprising in 1956. In addition, Grzyb noted that the marshal was the commander-in-chief of the group of Soviet troops in Germany during the Berlin crisis.
The mayor also mentioned the political views of Konev, who “disagreed with Nikita Khrushchev’s criticism of Stalin’s crimes and condemnation of the cult of personality”, and also “planned a military invasion of Poland in October 1956” in response to “measures to democratize” this country.
Konev is twice a Hero of the Soviet Union and a knight of the Order of Victory. He commanded fronts during the Great Patriotic War, participated in the Battle of Moscow and the Battle of Kursk, the liberation of Czechoslovakia from German troops. Marshal died in 1973.
