The Syrian President has announced an amnesty for terrorists

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree on amnesty for citizens of the country convicted of terrorist activities, the state agency SANA reports.

The amnesty applies to crimes committed before April 30, 2022, with the exception of actions that resulted in the death of people.

A civil war has been going on in Syria since 2011, in which several anti-government terrorist organizations are participating on the side of the opposition. One of the largest “Islamic Front” was created to oppose the Assad government. It includes several groupings, including”Jaish al-Islam” and “Ahrar al-sham”. The goal of the organization is to establish control over Syria with the subsequent creation of an Islamic state. Other organizations involved in the conflict are the Islamic State and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (both recognized as terrorist in Russia and banned).

In January, the head of state announced an amnesty for all deserters, including those who fled the country, subject to voluntary attendance.

In May last year, Assad signed a decree on a general amnesty. Those convicted of misdemeanors, offenses, crimes, including evasion from military service, were released from punishment.
