Shoigu named priorities during the military operation in Ukraine

The main priorities of Russia in conducting a military operation in Ukraine are the preservation of the life and health of Russian servicemen, as well as the exclusion of threats to the safety of the civilian population, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on a conference call.

The Minister stressed that the operation will continue “until the tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief are fully completed” (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Shoigu accused the “collective West”, which continues to supply Kiev with weapons, of seeking to prolong the conflict in Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Defense, more than 28 thousand stolen goods arrived there. Some of the weapons, the minister claims, “are spreading across the Middle East region, and also end up on the black market.”

The Russian military operation has been going on since February 24. At the end of March, Shoigu said that its main tasks had been completed and the combat potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had been significantly reduced, so the Russian military could focus on the main goal of liberating Donbass.

On July 3, Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin that the Russian forces had taken control of Lisichansk, the satellite city of Severodonetsk and nearby settlements in the Luhansk region. Lysychansk remained the last major city under Kiev’s control in the region. Later, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky confirmed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had left Lisichansk: the decision was made to save the lives of the military.

Two days later, the head of the Ministry of Defense reported on the results of the “successful operation to liberate the LPR” and take control of 25 settlements.

Putin, in February announcing the start of the military operation, called its goal “demilitarization” and “denazification” of Ukraine, as well as the protection of the civilian population of Donbass from “genocide”, which, according to the president, was led by Kiev. On June 29, the head of state stated that the ultimate goal of Russia is to “liberate Donbass” and guarantee security for Moscow. Putin also urged not to talk about the timing of the operation due to the intensity of the fighting, which, according to him, is directly related to possible losses.

Martial law has been in effect in Ukraine since the end of February (it was last extended until August 23), Kiev has severed diplomatic relations with Moscow. In April, Zelensky said that the country was ready to fight with Russia for ten years. At the end of June, speaking at the G7 summit, he called for doing everything possible to end the fighting by the end of the year.
