Despite the pressure on the IAEA inspectors from the United States, the organization’s report on the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP is credible. This was stated at the Eastern Economic Forum by Russian President Vladimir Putin, broadcast by RBC.
When asked by the moderator whether the president trusts the IAEA report, Putin replied: “Yes, I certainly trust this report.”
At the same time, the Head of state stressed that the IAEA mission is under pressure from the countries in which they work, including the United States. «[Therefore, they cannot directly say that the shelling is carried out from the Ukrainian territory. Well, these are obvious things. We also control the station, our military personnel are standing there. Well, are we shooting by ourselves, or what?»— said Putin.
Putin called the statements that Russia is shelling the nuclear power plant nonsense. “We also control the station. Our servicemen are standing there. Well, are we shooting by ourselves or what? It’s just bullshit. There is no other way to say it,” he said.
The IAEA published a report on the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP on the eve of September 6. In it, the organization called for immediate measures to prevent a radiation accident that could occur due to damage to the power plant resulting from hostilities. At the same time, the agency’s employees did not see any signs of radiation spreading from the station. The mission also recorded the presence of Russian military personnel, vehicles and equipment and damage at several facilities of the station, but they refused to name those responsible for the arrivals.

Since Russia began military operations in Ukraine and took control of part of the territory of the Zaporozhye region, where the nuclear power plant is located, both sides of the conflict have repeatedly reported attacks on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. Shelling became more frequent in July and August. Moscow and Kiev blamed each other for this. Representatives of 40 countries called on the Russian authorities to transfer nuclear facilities under the control of Ukraine.
On September 1, IAEA experts arrived at the nuclear power plant. Upon arrival, they conducted an initial assessment and observed the work of the NPP staff. The head of the agency, Rafael Grossi, noted that the employees perform their work very professionally, despite difficult circumstances.
Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe by installed capacity and the third largest in the world. The Zaporizhia NPP accounts for six of the 15 operating nuclear power units in Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense of Russia announced the taking of the Zaporozhye NPP under control on February 28.Formally, the station is still under the management of Energoatom.
