Putin laid flowers at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier

Russian President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin Wall on June 22, the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, the press service of the head of state reports.

The traditional ceremony was held in the Alexander Garden. The soldiers of the honor guard set up a wreath with a ribbon in the colors of the Russian flag with a golden inscription “To an Unknown soldier from the President of the Russian Federation”.

After Putin, other participants of the ceremony laid flowers at the memorial.

The Day of Remembrance and Mourning is celebrated in Russia on the day of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war.

In 1945, on June 22, the first Victory Parade in honor of the end of the Great Patriotic War was held on Red Square. Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov hosted the parade.
