The day before the ceremony, Russian President Vladimir Putin also said goodbye to Gorbachev. He missed the official farewell due to his work schedule.
Mikhail Gorbachev died on the evening of August 30 at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow after a serious and prolonged illness. He was 91 years old, recently he suffered from kidney disease and underwent hemodialysis.
According to the Gorbachev Foundation, the funeral will be held at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. The politician will be buried next to his wife Raisa, who died in September 1999, they have been married since 1953.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the state would help the family organize the funeral, they would be attended by a guard of honor.
On August 31, Medvedev sent a telegram of condolences to Gorbachev’s colleagues, family and friends. The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council noted that the first and only president made difficult decisions in dramatic periods of Russia’s history and laid the foundations for global changes in the world. He pointed out that the politician had a serious impact on the course of human history.

During his presidential term in 2011, Medvedev awarded Gorbachev the highest award of Russia – the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.
