In addition to the US attempts to “squeeze out” Wagner’s PMCs from Africa, “a serious struggle” on this issue continues inside Russia: the company faces opposition and attempts to cut funding. This was announced by the founder of the PMCS Evgeny Prigozhin, a comment published by his press service.
“The Americans can’t move us out of Africa in any way. However, there is a serious struggle in Russia for us to leave there. Many people do not like the fact that Russia can conduct its own independent policy. And therefore there is serious opposition, including attempts to cut funding, so that I could not support groups on the territory of the African continent,” he said.
In January 2022, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrel, said that Wagnerians control all key security issues in the CAR. At that time, he stated that the PMCs fighters had already settled in Mali and that now the situation in this country is likely to worsen. The Russian authorities have confirmed the presence of one of the Russian PMCs in Mali.
In December 2021, the Council of the European Union for Foreign Affairs imposed sanctions against the Wagner PMCs and a number of persons associated with it. The document stated that the Wagner Group was responsible for serious human rights violations in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, the Central African Republic (CAR), Sudan and Mozambique, including torture and extrajudicial, mass or arbitrary executions and killings.
Prigozhin in September 2022 admitted that he was the founder of the Wagner PMCs.The businessman also repeatedly reported on the course of the special operation in Ukraine, where the PMCs fighters are actively involved. On January 13, he said that they were trying to steal the victory from the soldiers of the military company and belittle their merits as part of the Russian special operation. Prigozhin expressed the opinion that significant damage to PMCs can be caused by “intraspecific struggle, corruption, bureaucracy and officials who want to stay in their places”. According to him, recently the media has been actively working to prohibit the mention of Wagner’s PMCs.
