Taiwan called the destruction of a Chinese drone an “adequate measure”

In Taiwan, they called

The decision of the Taiwanese military to shoot down a Chinese drone over the Kinmen Islands controlled by Taipei is considered an “adequate measure”, since the device did not respond to warnings. This was stated by the chairman of the Government of Taiwan Su Zhenchang, reports Reuters.

“They [the PRC Armed Forces] repeatedly ignored our warnings about the need to leave the area, and we had no choice but to exercise self-defense and shoot. This is the most adequate reaction after the manifestations of restraint and warnings,” the Prime minister said.

A Chinese drone was shot down in the airspace of Taiwan near the island of Shiyu (Kinmen Archipelago) on September 1. According to local authorities, the device carried out illegal photography and did not leave the closed area after the subsequent warning shots in his direction.

Jinmen is an archipelago with an area of 153 square kilometers, located two dozen kilometers from mainland China and belongs to Taiwan. The population of the island counts about 128 thousand people.

Taiwan declared secession from China during the civil War in 1949. Beijing does not recognize the independence of the island and considers it its province. The administrative status of the region has not yet been settled.

Tensions between China and Taiwan have increased in recent weeks due to the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island. On August 2, the latter arrived in Taiwan, despite all the objections of Beijing. After getting off the plane, Pelosi announced that the main goal of the American delegation was to support Taiwan’s vibrant and dynamic democracy. She left the island on August 3.

The Chinese authorities criticized Pelosi’s visit, saying that she defied the world, deliberately committed a provocation and violated the principle of “one China”. They condemned the visits of other representatives of Washington. On August 2, the Chinese military began naval and air exercises with firing as a response to Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan. In China, they said that they would end on Sunday, August 7. But the day before the end, Beijing announced another maneuvers, until August 15 in the southern part of the Yellow Sea.

The IAEA conducted an initial assessment of the condition of the Zaporozhye NPP

The IAEA conducted an initial assessment of the condition of the Zaporozhye NPP

The IAEA delegation led by Rafael Grossi (in the center)at the Zaporozhye NPP, September 01, 2022

It was difficult for the staff of the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to get to the Zaporozhye NPP, but upon arrival at the station they were able to conduct an initial assessment and see the professional work of the staff. This was stated by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.

“Yes, it [getting to the nuclear power plant] was not easy. But it is important that we have arrived. <...> For me, the work starts now. We conducted an initial assessment. We see the dedicated work of the staff and management of the station. Despite the difficult situation and circumstances, they do their job very professionally,” the head of the organization told reporters (quoted by TASS).

According to Grossi, the IAEA mission saw key things in a couple of hours that it wanted to look at. He added that the inspection participants will remain in the city and plan to meet with residents of Energodar.

The IAEA delegation led by Grossi arrived at the station around 14:00 on September 1 and stayed there for several hours. Two days earlier, representatives of the agency met with President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev.

The visit of the IAEA delegation is connected with reports of ongoing strikes on nuclear power plants. The Russian Defense Ministry claims that the Ukrainian side has been shelling the station since mid-July. Moscow rejects Kiev’s accusations of placing heavy weapons at the nuclear power plant.

Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant by installed capacity and the third largest in the world, located on the banks of the Dnieper River in the city of Energodar. It accounts for six of the 15 operating nuclear power units in Ukraine. Since the end of February, the NPP has been under the control of Russian forces, but formally remains under the control of Energoatom.

On the morning of September 1, the Russian Defense Ministry reported an attempt by the Ukrainian landing force to seize the Zaporozhye NPP. The ministry called it a provocation aimed at disrupting the visit of the IAEA delegation.

Georgia announced no plans to cancel the visa-free regime with Russia

BThe visa regime between Russia and Georgia has been in effect since 2012. According to the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, the opposition stands for the abolition of the regime, but there are no grounds for revision

Georgia announced no plans to cancel the visa-free regime with Russia

The Georgian authorities do not see the need to revise the visa-free policy with Russia. This was stated by the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, Sputnik reports.

The politician stressed that the radical Georgian opposition demands to introduce a visa regime with Russia, however, according to him, its statements are nothing more than speculation.

“We have no grounds for revising the visa-free regime for Russian citizens visiting Georgia, adopted by the previous authorities. Today we do not see any risks when Russian citizens are staying with us, so there is no need to revise this regime,” Kobakhidze said.

The visa-free regime between Russia and Georgia has been in effect since 2012, when Mikhail Saakashvili was president. Russian citizens can stay in the country without a visa for 365 days.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from March 2020 to February 2021, restrictions on entry into Georgia were in effect for all foreign citizens. After the borders were opened, the condition for entry was the availability of a coronavirus vaccination certificate.

On August 30, representatives of 27 EU countries reached a political agreement to completely freeze the visa facilitation agreement with Russia. This will mean an increase in the time for processing documents and an increase in the visa fee (from €35 to €80). It is not yet known when the decision will take effect.

Deputy Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Grushko promised that “violation, circumvention or withdrawal of the EU from the agreement with Russia on a simplified visa regime will not remain without consequences”.

The President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, offered to completely close the entry of Russians to Western countries, among other things. In his opinion, isolation will allow “calling to account” ordinary citizens and thus influence Vladimir Putin. Zelensky later said that for those Russians who are persecuted at home, it is necessary to preserve the opportunity to receive asylum, but there should be no question of tourism.

In Europe, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland, the Netherlands, and others advocated a ban on issuing visas to Russians. France, Germany and Portugal did not support the restrictions. The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrel, called the ban on visas for all Russians “not the best idea” and advocated selectivity in this matter.

NBC reported searches in Vekselberg-related homes in the United States

Viktor Vekselberg

Employees of the FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security are conducting searches in real estate objects allegedly associated with Russian businessman Viktor Vekselberg (under US sanctions), NBC reports, citing sources.

According to the TV channel, on Thursday morning, FBI agents were seen at an apartment in a multi-storey building on Park Avenue in Manhattan and an estate in Southampton (New York State), which, according to authorities, are connected with Vekselberg.

According to sources, agents also searched a house in Fisher Island in Miami, which, according to authorities, is also connected with the Russian.

Five boxes and two safes were taken out of a house on Park Avenue in New York, presumably connected with Vekselberg, RIA Novosti reports, citing a correspondent.

A representative of Vekselberg did not respond to a request from RBC.

In early April, the US Department of Justice announced the arrest of the Tango yacht in Spain at the request of the American side. According to the agency, it is owned by the founder of the group “Renova” Vekselberg. Tango, as it followed from the arrest warrant, “was subject to confiscation” on the basis of violation of US laws on money laundering, fraud in the banking sector and violation ofsanctions. According to the Ministry of Justice, the businessman used shell companies to hide operations related to the ship. After Vekselberg was sanctioned in April 2018, he and his proxies “continued to make dollar payments through US banks for maintenance of Tango”, including mooring, the agency claimed.

Vekselberg was included in the list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) of the Ministry of Finance, which involves blocking assets and isolation from the dollar system. It also houses the Renova group.

In 2014, RBC wrote about the New York offices or apartments of a businessman in connection with a lawsuit at that time by Senator Leonid Lebedev, which he filed against Vekselberg and Leonard Blavatnik, former co-owners of TNK-B. Court couriers then tried to find him in order to hand him a notice of the lawsuit filed against him. In particular, an apartment was mentioned at 1009 Park Avenue in Manhattan, where one of the couriers visited several times. The concierge saidhe is told that Vekselberg is a new tenant of Apartment 5A, but now it is being renovated, there is no one at home. From the New York StreetEasy residential real estate database at that time, it followed that Vekselberg was renting apartment 5A/6A in a 1920s-built house since February 2014, it has seven rooms (including four bedrooms) and six bathrooms. The apartments were offered to tenants for $ 36.5 thousand per month, RBC wrote.

Novak promised to stop oil supplies to those who introduce a price ceiling

Initse-Prime Minister Novak: Russia will not supply oil to countries that will impose a price ceiling Attempts to limit oil prices “will lead to the destabilization of the oil market,” for which European and American consumers will first have to pay, the Deputy Prime Minister warned

Novak promised to stop oil supplies to those who introduce a price ceiling

Alexander Novak

Russia will not supply oil and petroleum products to countries that will impose a price ceiling, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told reporters.

“As for price restrictions: if they impose price restrictions, then we are simply for such companies or countries that will impose restrictions, we will not supply them with oil and petroleum products, because we will not work on non-market conditions,” Novak said (quoted by TASS).

He called such proposals “complete absurdity” and “interference in market mechanisms”. Attempts to limit oil prices will lead to the destabilization of the oil industry, the oil market, and first of all, European and American consumers will have to pay for it, for whom energy resources have already risen in price, Novak noted. “This will completely destroy the market,” the Deputy Prime Minister warned.

The fact that Russia can block oil in the event of a price ceiling was allowed by the head of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina at the end of July. Novak at that time called a condition for the termination of supplies the limitation of its value below the cost of production.

In early June, the EU imposed another package of sanctions against Russia, which included a partial embargo on Russian oil. We are talking about a ban on deliveries by sea. The United States refused to import Russian raw materials back in March. Then the G7 countries decided to limit the prices of Russian oil.

According to US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, in the event of a complete ban on the import of Russian raw materials, prices for it may rise even more, and then Moscow will be able to earn money by selling to other countries to India or China. The solution should be the introduction of a ceiling on prices for Russian oil, which will not allow it to be sold at a price higher than the established one. “Thus, the Russians will receive a tiny part of the profit, which will pay for their presence on the market,” Nuland noted.

At the end of July, Reuters, citing a source, reported that the G7 countries were going to set a price limit by December 5, then the EU oil embargo would come into force.

At the end of August, The Wall Street Journal newspaper, citing sources, wrote that the finance ministers of the G7 countries on September 2 at an online meeting intend to present a plan for the introduction of a marginal price for oil and petroleum products from Russia. According to the publication, they want to discuss it by the end of this week, hoping to work out a solution by December.

President Vladimir Putin, speaking about the West’s plans to limit prices, pointed out that Western countries are stepping “on the same rake” as with Russian gas, and warned that prices in this case “will skyrocket”.

Poland has named a new required amount of reparations from Germany

Reparations worth about $1.3 trillion “will not burden Germany in any way” and are a lifting sum for its economy, the head of the ruling party of Poland believes. Earlier, Warsaw called the amounts of $850 billion and $540 billion

Poland named the new required amount of reparations from Germany

Poland will demand 6.2 trillion zlotys (about $1.3 trillion) of reparations from Germany for the damage suffered in World War II, the head of the ruling Law and Justice party Jaroslaw Kaczynski said, Forsal reports.

“The amount that was presented as the cost of the damage is 6 trillion 200 billion zlotys,” Kaczynski said. According to him, the amount was calculated “by the most conservative method” and could have been more.

The politician also expressed the opinion that the specified amount is “completely acceptable” for the German economy and “will not burden it in any way.” Kaczynski explained that a significant part of the amount is “compensation for the deaths of more than 5.2 million Polish citizens”.

According to Kaczynski, the path to receiving reparations will be long, but Warsaw will succeed.

The Special Commission of the Polish Sejm on Reparations in 2017 estimated the damage caused to the country by Germany during the Second World War at $48.8 billion. However, in March 2018, the required amount of payments was increased several times – it reached $850 billion. 20 days later, Warsaw reduced it to $543 billion.

In October of that year, the Polish authorities announced that they would recalculate the amount of reparations “according to the new technology”. Despite the fact that the German authorities recognize responsibility for World War II, they have repeatedly denied Poland reparations, referring to the resolution of the Polish Sejm of 1953. In that document, Warsaw stated that Germany had fulfilled all obligations to compensate for the damage. In addition, in 1991, Berlin paid another 1.3 billion euros as part of the neighborhood agreement.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak in 2019 said that the decision of the Sejm in 1953 was not sovereign, and blamed Russia for the lack of compensation.

In early July 2022, Kaczynski said that Poland would soon have the right to “punch the table” on the issue of reparations from Germany. At the end of the month, the politician did not rule out that he might not live to receive reparations from Germany. “I may not live to see it, but someday I need to start,” said 73-year-old Kaczynski.

The IAEA experts arrived at the Zaporozhye NPP

Aboutneither should assess the condition of the station and the risks to its safety. On the day of arrival, the Ministry of Defense reported on the shelling of nuclear power plants by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as the landing of Ukrainian troops

The IAEA experts arrived at the Zaporozhye NPP

The mission of the IAEA experts, which is designed to assess the safety of the Zaporozhye NPP, has arrived at the station, correspondents of RIA Novosti and Interfax report.

A motorcade of nine cars entered the station at about 14:15 Moscow time, Interfax writes. “RIA Novosti” publishes a video of this moment. It shows white cars marked UN (UN, IAEA created in the organization’s system), as well as escort vehicles entering the territory of the station.

The journey from Kiev to Energodar, where the NPP is located, took experts almost two days. On Tuesday, August 30, before going to the station, the IAEA staff held a meeting in Kiev with the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky. After that, they proceeded to the demarcation line, where they got in line from others entering the part of Zaporozhye occupied by Russian forces. The head of the local administration, Yevgeny Balitsky, stated that he was asked to speed up the process of passing international experts through the checkpoint, but he refused.

“When I was asked to speed up the process, I said that I was not going to speed up this process, let them stand in line… Let them stand in line and talk to people, people will tell them everything, tell them the truth, we have nothing to hide,” he told the day before on the TV channel “Russia-24”.

Around noon on September 1, it became known that members of the delegation were detained at a checkpoint in the territory controlled by Ukraine. The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, who is part of the delegation, personally entered into negotiations with the Ukrainian military. The head of the civil-military administration of the Zaporozhye region, Yevgeny Balitsky, clarified that part of the column was able to pass into the neutral zone, but some were detained at a checkpoint. However, in the end, all employees of the Atomic Energy Agency were allowed to pass.

The program of the IAEA mission at the Zaporozhye NPP is designed for one day, Balitsky said.

“The program of the visit is designed for one day. They have to see the operation of the station in one day. Those elements that they will say, it is possible to look at in the process. So far stated [mission objective]— «get acquainted with the work of the station». For us, this is a vague concept,” he said. At the same time, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, who was also part of the delegation, said that the organization hopes to create a permanent mission at the NPP. “We have a very important task ahead of us to assess the real situation there and help stabilize it,” the head of the agency emphasized.

The Russian Defense Ministry claims that the Zaporozhye NPP has been systematically shelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine since mid-July. Strikes on the Energodar are carried out from multiple rocket launchers, barrel artillery and using unmanned aerial vehicles. Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations of the deployment of heavy weapons by Russian forces on the territory of the NPP.

Over the past two days, there have been several attacks on the Zaporozhye NPP and the city of Energodar. The day before, the local administration announced the detention of a group of saboteurs who were preparing a terrorist attack. Small arms, improvised explosive devices and grenade launchers were seized from the detainees. “According to preliminary data, the terrorist attack was being prepared during the visit of the IAEA delegation to show the uncontrollability of the situation and that Russia cannot ensure security,” said Vladimir Rogov, a member of the regional CAA.

In addition, on the eve of the building of the administration of the city of Energodar, a kamikaze drone was struck.

On the morning of September 1, the Ministry of Defense reported an attempt by the Ukrainian landing force to seize the Zaporozhye NPP, as well as the shelling of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The ministry considered this a provocation aimed at disrupting the visit of the IAEA delegation. According to the latest information, the battle with the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is still going on, it is being led by 12 Ukrainian military against the Russian military. Also, the Ministry of Defense reported the sinking of two barges with paratroopers.

Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant by installed capacity and the third largest in the world, located on the banks of the Dnieper River in the city of Energodar. Six of the 15 operating nuclear power units of Ukraine are located on it. Since the end of February, the NPP has been under the control of Russian forces, but formally remains under the control of Energoatom.
