The loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war can provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war, Deputy head of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev believes. He wrote about this in Telegram.

He noted that at the NATO military base “Ramstein” on January 20, “great military leaders will discuss new tactics and strategy, as well as the supply of new heavy weapons and strike systems to Ukraine.”

“And it does not occur to any of the poor to draw the following elementary conclusion from this: the loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war can provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war. The nuclear powers have not lost major conflicts on which their fate depends,” Medvedev said, adding that “it should be obvious” to anyone.

On the eve of The New York Times sources from among American officials told the publication that the US presidential administration now admits that Kiev will probably need weapons to attack Crimea, even if such a step threatens to escalate the conflict. The US authorities are discussing with colleagues from Ukraine the possibility of using the supplied weapons (from HIMARS MLRS to Bradley armored vehicles) to attack the Crimea or the Crimean Bridge, the newspaper reported.

The newspaper’s interlocutors linked the change in Washington’s position with the prevailing opinion that if Russia feels the risk of losing control over Crimea, it will strengthen Ukraine’s position in any future negotiations. At the same time, among officials and experts in the United States, fears have eased that Russia will strike back with tactical nuclear weapons. At the same time, according to the newspaper’s interlocutors, the risk of such a scenario still persists.

At the end of September last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to protect the territorial integrity of the country with all available means. According to him, the West uses “nuclear blackmail”, while Russia also has various means of destruction, and in some components, more modern than those of NATO countries. At the same time, a month later, the Russian president assured that there was no sense in a nuclear strike for the country, neither political nor military. Russia will not use nuclear weapons first, but the threat of nuclear war is growing, Putin said.

In mid-January, the White House issued a joint statement by US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, which stated that Tokyo and Washington would perceive “any use of nuclear weapons by Russia in Ukraine” as “an unjustified hostile act against all mankind”.

Medvedev, reacting to the statement, criticized the Japanese Prime Minister. According to him, he refuses to “even comment on paranoia about our state’s nuclear plans.” According to him, the Prime Minister of Japan is talking nonsense about Russia, thereby betraying the memory of hundreds of thousands of Japanese who burned in the nuclear bonfire of Hiroshima andNagasaki». “And Kisida absolutely does not care that the only country that fully used nuclear weapons was the United States. And her only victim—his own homeland—,— he wrote.
