Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saw the US initiative to hold a world summit of democracies as a proclamation of a new crusade against all dissenters. He stated this during a speech at the UN General Assembly.

Lavrov gave an example of the idea of a meeting of democratic leaders of the world proposed by the American administration, speaking about the persistent attempts of the West to belittle the role of the UN in solving key problems of our time, to push it into the background or turn it into an obedient tool for promoting someone’s selfish interests and the desire of Western countries to exclude those who have their own, different point of view from the process of developing global solutions.

“Of course, Washington will determine the participants itself, appropriating to itself the right to determine the degree of compliance of a particular country with democratic standards. In fact, this initiative is quite in the spirit of the Cold War, [it] proclaims a new ideological “crusade” against all dissenters, ” the minister said.

At the same time, he mentioned the words of US President Joe Biden, who spoke about the lack of desire to split the world. The President said at the General Assembly that Washington does not seek to unleash a new cold war and divide the world into blocs. “The summit of democracies” will be a step towards splitting the world community into “our own” and “others”, ” concluded the head of the Foreign Ministry.

Biden promised to hold a “summit for democracy” even during the election race. “During my first year in the White House, the United States will organize and hold a global summit for democracy to strengthen the spirit and common goal of the nations of the free world,” he said in the spring of 2020. In February of this year, the American leader announced that the first meeting of the world’s democratic leaders is scheduled for December 9–10, where common efforts to counter threats will be discussed.

Biden has repeatedly spoken about the confrontation between democracy and autocracy and called for opposing countries that are supporters of the latter. In particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are “putting” on autocracy, the American president said.
