«Kommersant» found out about unsuccessful attempts to select jurors in the Furgal case

Sergey Furgal

The Lyubertsy City Court of Moscow has made two unsuccessful attempts to select a jury to consider the criminal case of the ex-governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergey Furgal. This is reported by the newspaper “Kommersant” with reference to the participants of the selection.

According to the publication, candidates were eliminated on their own initiative. Reason for refusal — working conditions: three times a week, at 638 rubles. for «a day ». The court said that the jury will have to work from morning to evening, and the whole process will take about four months.

At the first stage, 17 candidates were selected in absentia. The court studied their questionnaires and chose those “whose biographies turned out to be absolutely transparent and clean”. According to the law “On Jurors”, candidates are required to do the following:

  • Russian citizenship;
  • age 25 and older;
  • full legal capacity;
  • no criminal record.

“Considering that for the consideration of the case on the merits, the court required at least six main and two alternate jurors, and for normal work it was planned to form a panel of 12 people for several months, the number of applicants turned out to be catastrophically small,” the newspaper writes.

When refusing, the candidates referred to poor health, small children or difficulties when traveling to the place of the court session. In total, the court managed to select seven out of 17 people. One reserve juror is not enough to start a trial. For this reason, the third stage of the selection was postponed to April 26.

The first stage of the selection was to take place on March 17. However, it had to be rescheduled because of the alleged accomplice of the accused, Marat Kadyrov, who, according to the investigation, made a failed attempt on the instructions of Sergei Furgal. Kadyrov, suffering from lung disease, as it turned out, quarreled with his lawyerAndrey Kozlov, due to disagreements with the methods of diagnosis and treatment of his illness, refused to defend himself directly at the preliminary hearings in the Moscow Regional Court. Since his other lawyer, Anna Naumova, was on sick leave at the time, the accused turned out to be defenseless at jury selection, and the whole procedure was postponed.

The defense asked to review Furgal’s case in a jury trial in Khabarovsk. However, the Supreme Court considered that in this case the jury would be biased, and decided to hold a meeting in Lyubertsy near Moscow.

The ex-governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, was detained and taken to Moscow on July 9 last year. He is accused of organizing the murders of Far Eastern businessmen in the 2000s, when he was still engaged in business. Then entrepreneurs Evgeny Zorya, Oleg Bulatov, Alexander Adamov and Roman Sandalov were killed. On July 20, 2020, President Vladimir Putin removed Furgal from office with the wording “due to loss of confidence” and appointed Mikhail Degtyarev, a member of the LDPR, as acting governor.
