The Turkish authorities have proposed to launch a humanitarian corridor between Russia and Ukraine on their territory for the return of wounded military and civilians, Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets said on the air of the national telethon.

“The idea of the Turkish side looks like they want to become intermediaries. They want to use their channels of communication with the Russian authorities and civilians or wounded military personnel to first return from Russia to Turkey, and after that they will return to Ukraine,” Lubinets said (quoted by UNN). He noted that so far this is only a proposal that the parties are discussing.

In an interview with Ukrinform, Lubinets noted that the idea of creating a humanitarian corridor arose during a conversation with Russian Commissioner for Human Rights Tatiana Moskalkova and Turkish colleague Sheref Malkoch in Ankara. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that he supports its opening and is going to discuss the proposal with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia. Erdogan noted that the corridor could be used by wounded from other countries: Syria, Azerbaijan and Libya.

According to Lubinets, Turkey “has certain opportunities to influence Russia’s position on certain issues so that it fulfills agreements and activates processes.” He noted Ankara’s mediation in concluding a food deal that allows grain to be withdrawn from Ukrainian ports, stuck in the country after the outbreak of hostilities.

Lubinets and Moskalkova held several rounds of negotiations in Turkey. The Russian Ombudsman said on January 12 that the topic of the humanitarian corridor was not discussed at them, the military departments of the countries are talking about issues of a “global, strategic nature.” The Commissioner urged “not to replace state bodies, but to act in a coordinated manner.”
