Turkey has agreed to mediate in negotiations on the evacuation of Kiev-controlled forces from “Azovstal” in Mariupol, said Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, Minister for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories. Her words are quoted on Facebook (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) by the Ukrainian Ministry for Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons.

She clarified that a meeting with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will be held in Russia today to coordinate the first stage of the evacuation of the Ukrainian military from the plant. It will include the withdrawal of the severely wounded from Azovstal. Vereshchuk added that Kiev wants to sign a separate document on how exactly the evacuation will take place.

She claims that on the territory of the plant there are now not only fighters of the national battalion “Azov” (recognized in Russia as extremist and banned), but also soldiers and officers of the SBU, national police and border guards.

On May 5, the operation of the UN and the Red Cross to evacuate civilians began at the Mariupol enterprise “Azovstal”. This became possible after the talks of UN Chief Antonio Guterres with the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky at the end of April.

On May 6, the UN and the Donetsk People’s Republic reported that during the first day of the operation, 150 civilians were withdrawn from Azovstal. On May 7, Kiev reported that all women, children and elderly people had left the company. Later that day, the Ministry of Defense told about the rescue of 51 people, including 11 children.

On May 10, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk told AFP that about a thousand Ukrainian soldiers remain at the plant, including “hundreds” of wounded. On May 11, she said that Kiev had offered Moscow to exchange them for Russian prisoners. There are no agreements, negotiations on this issue are ongoing, she stressed.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Kiev is seeking the evacuation of servicemen from “Azovstal” in order to hide the presence of Ukrainian military mercenaries. According to the head of the department, Sergey Lavrov, there are “characters” at the enterprise who will confirm the presence of mercenaries, maybe even active officers of Western armies on the side of Ukrainian radicals.
