The town of Popasnaya, located between Lugansk and Kramatorsk, has been completely liberated from Ukrainian troops, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, said in his Telegram channel.
“I thank the fighters for their service and courage shown during the liberation of this important and complex strategic settlement, which was strengthened by the Ukrainian military for years in advance,” Kadyrov wrote. He added that the residents of the city “will now be able to return to a peaceful life”.
At night, Kadyrov said that the Russian military had taken control of most of this settlement. He noted that the Ukrainian side was preparing for a long defense: fortifications were erected on the approaches to the city. Nevertheless, according to Kadyrov, since the beginning of the assault on Popasnaya, a successful outcome for the Russian military was inevitable, “it was only a matter of time.”
In early May, the head of Chechnya spoke about the “imminent liberation” of the city and reported that Chechen fighters were clearing it from the Ukrainian military. The head of the city’s military-civil administration Nikolay Khanatov on May 6 urged residents to evacuate.
