Iran does not recognize the entry of Crimea and four new regions into Russia, despite “excellent relations with Moscow,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on TRT World.

“We recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries within the framework of international laws, therefore, despite the excellent relations between Tehran and Moscow, we did not recognize the separation of Crimea.”;>, Luhansk and Donetsk regions from Ukraine <…>. Because we insist on our consistent principle in foreign policy: when we say that the conflict in Ukraine is not a solution, we believe in our position as a fundamental political principle,” Abdollahian said (quoted by TASS).

Crimea became part of Russia following a referendum held on March 16, 2014. Then more than 95% of the participants of the plebiscite voted for the annexation of the peninsula to Russia. The authorities of Ukraine and Western countries called this step annexation. The Russian side has repeatedly stated that the issue of ownership of the peninsula is not subject to discussion. To date, eight states have recognized Crimea as Russian: Venezuela, Nicaragua, Syria, Afghanistan, North Korea, Cuba, as well as partially recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions were incorporated into Russia on October 5 following the results of referendums held there. This happened in the eighth month of the Russian special military operation conducted on the territory of Ukraine, the purpose of which President Vladimir Putin, among other things, called the protection of the population of Donbass. On the eve of the head of state also said that the meaning of the special operation is the cessation of hostilities that have been going on in eastern Ukraine since 2014.

Iran, unlike Western countries, has not imposed sanctions against Russia and has consistently advocated strengthening interstate relations. Ukraine, the US and the EU accused Tehran of supporting the Russian special operation, including the transfer of weapons to Moscow. The Russian and Iranian authorities denied this.
