Russia is working on creating a new generation of hypersonic missiles for various carriers, tests are already underway. This was stated to Interfax by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov.
“Work is underway to create a new generation of hypersonic ground-based, air-based and sea-based missiles. According to their characteristics, they will surpass the existing and promising developments of the leading states,” he said.
According to him, it is planned to equip modernized and promising aviation complexes with new missiles. “Tests are already underway on the Tu-22M3M missile carriers,” Borisov added.
President Vladimir Putin stated in his message to the Federal Assembly in March 2018 that Russia has hypersonic missiles flying at speeds exceeding the speed of sound at times, including “Dagger” and “Avangard”. In May last year, he also announced the completion of tests of the hypersonic missile system “Zircon”.
In 2020, the Pentagon admitted that they had lost world leadership in the development of hypersonic weapons. They noted that within a few years the country will have to restore its position.

Russia’s development of a new generation of hypersonic weapons was announced by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in August 2021. “We have an increase in the range of hypersonic weapons in the future. This is an increase in speeds, if we talk about the same hypersonic, this is an increase in accuracy, this is, of course, the adaptation of carriers to new types of weapons,” Shoigu said.
On March 19 of this year, the Ministry of Defense for the first time reported the use of a hypersonic missile “Dagger” during a special operation in Ukraine. Then the military department reported on the destruction of a large underground warehouse of missiles and aviation ammunition of the Ukrainian forces in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
