The candidate in the presidential elections in France, the head of the party “National Association” Marine Le Pen admitted defeat in them, reports Reuters.

According to BFM TV, Le Pen has already called Macron to congratulate him. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, also congratulated Macron on his victory on their Twitter accounts.

Speaking to her supporters in Paris, Le Pen, however, called her election result a “resounding victory”.

“Millions of our compatriots have chosen the national camp and change. I express my deepest gratitude to those who trusted me in the first round, and to those millions who joined us in the second,” Le Pen quotes Le Figaro.

She also announced a “big electoral battle” for the French legislature along with everyone who is “against Emmanuel Macron”. Elections to the National Council, the lower house of Parliament, are scheduled in France in June. They traditionally take place after the presidential elections.

According to the first exit polls published after the polls closed, Macron is winning the presidential election. According to IPSOS, he received 58.2%, Le Pen- 41.8%. The final results of the elections after counting 100% of the votes will be published on the website of the French Interior Ministry.

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko called on neighboring countries to live together and protect the world from war. He said this in the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in the urban settlement of Kopys during the celebration of Easter, follows from a message on the president’s website.

Lukashenko called Easter and Victory Day equivalent to great and bright holidays and noted that now believers ask God for the main thing – peace, harmony and friendship. He also said that the Belarusian people demand that there be no war.

“Let’s live together. I would like to ask my fellow politicians: let’s not create problems for our people, there are enough of them now. Look at what is happening with neighboring Lithuania and Latvia, the Poles. I’m not talking about Ukraine in this case anymore,” Lukashenko said.

Previously, Ukrainians were happy and cheerful, lived well, and now they are asking to let them cross the border to buy buckwheat and salt, the Belarusian president said.

Lukashenko stressed that borders should not interfere with normal life and human relations, which he wants to achieve for the republic from neighbors.

“I want to say to Belarusians: happiness, by and large, we have one thing – we need to save our land. You will lose your land— you will have neither health nor happiness. You will have neither money nor salt, and your children will not be,” the president noted.

At the same time, the Belarusian president addressed Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. “The Easter holiday reminds all believers of the fateful day that changed the history of mankind: life and light triumphed over death and darkness,” he said. On the eve of the Easter address, the patriarch called for prayer for peace.

On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine. Lukashenko denied the information about the participation of the Belarusian armed forces in military operations.

In early March, he assured that Minsk would not participate in the operation. At the same time, the then president stated that on the evening of February 23, Russian “Iskanders” were in the Mozyr area in the Gomel region and struck at Ukrainian positions. According to his version, the Ukrainians placed heavy rocket artillery near the border before the conflict began. He showed on the map, “from where an attack was being prepared on Belarus.”

Switzerland refused to supply Germany with ammunition to Ukraine

Germany has requested permission to supply Kiev with ammunition for the German BMP Marder, which are manufactured in Zurich. The Swiss authorities refused, referring to the neutral status

Switzerland refused to supply Germany with ammunition to Ukraine

BMP Marder

Switzerland refused to supply Germany with ammunition for the Marder BMP to Ukraine, writes the Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung. Information about two requests from the German authorities was confirmed by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland (SECO). They reported that both Berlin’s appeals concerned the transfer of ammunition previously received from Switzerland to Kiev.

As the newspaper notes, the Marder-type BMP is produced by the German Rheinmetall concern, and one of its ammunition production facilities is located in Zurich.

“A negative response was given to both German requests, citing Swiss neutrality and mandatory refusal criteria in accordance with the legislation on military products,” SECO spokesman Fabian Mayenfisch told the publication.

States that have received weapons or military equipment from Switzerland cannot transfer it to third countries without the consent of Bern, the newspaper explains. In addition, Swiss legislation prohibits the export of military products to countries where there is an armed conflict.

Despite these rules, the newspaper notes, Swiss military products have already appeared in Ukraine. Britain supplied Kiev with anti-tank weapons with Swiss warheads. To do this, London took advantage of a loophole in the law, according to which no special permission from the Swiss government is required for the export of individual parts or components of weapons.

Before the start of the Russian special operation, Berlin refused to supply Kiev with weapons, but with the beginning of hostilities, it changed its position. At the end of February, Germany decided to supply 1 thousand Panzerfaust anti-tank missiles and 500 Stinger missiles to Ukraine.

Berlin also approved the transfer of 400 anti-tank guns produced in Germany from the Netherlands and nine D-30 howitzers and ammunition from Estonia. At the end of March, the DPA agency, citing sources, wrote that 1.5 thousand portable anti-aircraft missile systems “Strela”, 100 MG3 machine guns, 8 million rounds of firearms will also be transferred to Kiev.

In April, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany had almost completely exhausted the limit on arms supplies to Ukraine from its reserves. He also said that the German government has sent a request to the manufacturers of weapons to understand how quickly they will be able to provide the necessary military products to Kiev.

The leader of the German opposition, the head of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) Friedrich Merz criticized Scholz for insufficient assistance to Ukraine. In his opinion, if the Chancellor does not make a decision on the supply of heavy weapons to Kiev in the near future, then the Bundestag should do it.

Erdogan informed Zelensky about his attitude to the idea of security guarantees

PResidents Vladimir Zelensky and Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey generally looks positively at the proposal to become a guarantor of Ukraine’s security, Erdogan said. Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Ankara is ready to provide the necessary support to the negotiation process between Moscow and Kiev, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Reuters reports.

He added that Turkey is generally positive about acting as a guarantor of Ukraine’s security. The presidents also discussed issues of defense capability and global food security, which was under threat due to the shutdown of shipping in the Black Sea, Zelensky wrote on Twitter.

The Ukrainian president also said that during the conversation he stated the need for an urgent evacuation of civilians from Mariupol, including from the Azovstal plant, and also insisted on an immediate exchange of the military blocked there. Erdogan supported the idea of evacuating the wounded and civilians from the city.

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk reported on April 21 that there are about 1 thousand civilians and 500 wounded soldiers on the territory of “Azovstal”. The Ministry of Defense called the data on the civilian population stuffing, and then said that no one came out through the humanitarian corridor.

Since the beginning of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Turkey has repeatedly made attempts to mediate in negotiations. On March 29, the delegations of Moscow and Kiev met in Istanbul, where the Ukrainian side proposed a new scheme to ensure its security instead of joining NATO. According to it, the guarantor countries should be states from among the permanent members of the UN Security Council, including Russia, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Israel, Poland and Canada. The Kremlin offered Kiev Belarus as a guarantor.

The authorities of Germany, France, Italy, and the UK have expressed their readiness to become guarantors for Ukraine. In turn, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on April 20 that the country does not agree with Ukraine’s demand to provide it with security guarantees on the model of the fifth article of the NATO treaty until Kiev outlines specific conditions. «Inin principle, no one opposes such guarantees. But their terms are unclear,” the diplomat said.

In addition to the negotiations of the delegations, in early April Turkey offered to organize a meeting of the presidents of Russia and Ukraine together with the foreign ministers.

The Austrian Foreign Minister opposed Ukraine’s membership in the EU

The Austrian Foreign Minister believes that there should be a “different way” of rapprochement between Kiev and Brussels, except for joining the EU, the European Economic Area or the current Association Agreement

The Austrian Foreign Minister opposed Ukraine's membership in the EU

Alexander Schallenberg

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said that he considers it necessary to further strengthen relations between Kiev and the European Union, but does not support Ukraine’s accession to the union. The words of the Foreign Minister are quoted by the Austrian media, including the newspaper Heute and the TV channel Oe24.

Schallenberg does not advocate full membership of Ukraine in the EU, but calls for a “different path” (what it is, is not specified). According to the Minister, there should be other models of rapprochement between Kiev and Brussels, except for joining the European Economic Area or maintaining the current Association Agreement with the EU. The Foreign Minister called for “greater flexibility” in this matter.

The Ukrainian authorities expect that the country will receive the status of a candidate for EU membership in June, the head of the presidential office, Andriy Ermak, said earlier. Schallenberg does not agree with this; he mentioned the countries of the Western Balkans whose accession to the EU was raised earlier (Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia have the status of official candidates for accession to the European Union, Bosnia and Herzegovina and partially recognized Kosovo are potential).

In 2014, Ukraine and the European Union signed an association agreement. Ukraine’s aspiration to join the EU has been officially enshrined in the country’s Constitution since 2019. On February 28, a few days after the start of the Russian military operation, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed an application for the country’s accession to the EU, asking for its approval “immediately”. The document was addressed to the heads of the European Council, the European Parliament, as well as to Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, who holds the presidency of the EU.

The European Council decided in mid-March that the European Commission should submit its own opinion on the issue of Ukraine’s accession. Macron then indicated that the procedure for obtaining membership could not be open to a country that is fighting. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, for his part, noted that “no one entered the European Union overnight.” At the same time, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia supported the idea of Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said at the end of February: “This country [Ukraine] is one of us, and we want to see it in the European family.” On April 8, during a visit to Kiev, she handed Zelensky a questionnaire for joining the EU, ten days later he gave the completed questionnaire to the head of the European Union mission in Ukraine, Matti Maasikas.

The Kremlin believes that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is “in a different plane” than its admission to NATO. “The EU is not a military-political bloc,” the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov pointed out.

Bulgaria’s ruling coalition argued over arms supplies to Ukraine

The pro-Russian Socialists say they will withdraw from the ruling coalition if Sofia approves the supply of weapons to Kiev. “Democratic Bulgaria” threatens to do the same in case of refusal of supplies

Bulgaria's ruling coalition argued over arms supplies to Ukraine

The heads of the Foreign Ministries of Ukraine and Bulgaria Dmitry Kuleba and Theodora Genchovska

Bulgaria, the poorest member of the European Union, is in no hurry to make a decision on the supply of weapons to Ukraine due to disagreements on this issue in the ruling coalition, Bloomberg reports.

The coalition includes the parties “We continue the changes” of Prime Minister Kirill Petkov, “There are such people”, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and “Democratic Bulgaria”. Pro-Russian socialists have repeatedly warned that they will withdraw from the coalition if Sofia approves the supply of weapons to Kiev. At the same time, the center-right Democrats say they will do the same if Bulgaria refuses to supply.

Disputes in the Bulgarian parliament on this issue have dragged on, as expected, the coalition will continue the discussion next week.

Bulgaria produces Kalashnikov assault rifles, other types of weapons and ammunition. Despite this, Sofia has so far limited herself to sending humanitarian aid, helmets and bulletproof vests to Kiev. The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Kuleba, who visited Bulgaria earlier this week, said that this was not enough. “If you have a helmet and a bulletproof vest, but there are no weapons in your hands, you are doomed. So this half-measure is good politically, but basically the message is this: “We want you to die protected,” he said (quoted by Reuters).

According to Kuleba, “the best way to bring peace closer today is to support Ukraine,” and not to maintain a neutral position.

According to Euractiv, according to opinion polls, almost 70% of Bulgarian citizens do not want the government to approve the supply of weapons to Ukraine, although most are ready to help refugees and send humanitarian aid. As stated in the BSP, it is in the interests of Bulgaria that the government “does not go against the opinion of the overwhelming majority” and “does not create unnecessary unrest”. According to the deputy chairman of the party, former Foreign Minister Christian Vigenin, the Socialists support any assistance to Ukraine, except for the supply of lethal weapons and ammunition, which he called a red line.

On the eve of Petkov said that he personally supports the provision of military assistance to Ukraine. “For me as Kirill Petkov, and not as Prime Minister, military aid is absolutely right. But I am the prime minister, I have coalition partners who have clear red lines, and my task is not to pretend to be the bravest, he said (quoted by Sofia Globe).

According to Euractiv, apart from Bulgaria, Hungary remains the only NATO member that has not provided military assistance to Ukraine.

Bulgaria condemned the Russian military operation in Ukraine, supported EU sanctions against Moscow and hosted more than 90 thousand Ukrainian refugees, writes Reuters.

Zelensky called the conditions for withdrawing from negotiations with Russia

ZYelensky: Kiev will withdraw from the negotiations when holding referendums in the regions of Ukraine, According to Zelensky, he insisted on meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin “from the very beginning” because he considers the negotiations of delegations ineffective. Putin called the results of such negotiations a condition for meeting with Zelensky

Zelensky called the conditions for withdrawing from negotiations with Russia

Vladimir Zelensky

The President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, threatened to withdraw from the negotiations in case of holding referendums on the territory of the regions taken by the Russian army, he said at a press conference held at the Kiev metro station “Maidan Nezalezhnosti”. Zelensky also said again that Kiev would withdraw from the negotiations if the Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol were destroyed.

The President of Ukraine added that “from the very beginning” he insisted on meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, because he believes that the transfer of information through intermediaries “will not give the desired result”.

Since the beginning of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine on February 24, the parties at the level of delegations have held several rounds of negotiations both in person and online. Zelensky has also repeatedly said that he is ready for a conversation with Putin. On March 14, he said that Kiev was seeking a meeting of the leaders of the two countries during negotiations with Moscow on a settlement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on April 22 that he plans to hold telephone talks with Putin and Zelensky and hopes that these calls will help “bring the process in Istanbul to the level of leaders”. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had previously said that the possibility of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin depends on whether Putin says yes.

The Kremlin believes that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky is possible only after the document is approved by the delegations of Russia and Ukraine. The day before, Putin confirmed that the possibility of direct contact between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine depends on the results of negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian sides.

On April 16, Zelensky announced that Ukraine would stop negotiations with Russia if the Ukrainian military remaining in Mariupol were destroyed. Later, on April 20, he said that Kiev was ready to exchange the remaining military in Mariupol for Russian prisoners.

The Russian side also supports the continuation of negotiations and expects to complete the military operation with their help, the Kremlin said. Nevertheless, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov pointed out the “lack of dynamics” of the Ukrainian delegation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted on April 22 that the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are moving “slowly, slowly”. The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova said that Russia has lost confidence in the Ukrainian negotiators, as Kiev is changing its position and trying to “delay the negotiation process”.

The Ministry of Defense announced plans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to repeat the provocation in Butch in Lisichansk

Lisichansk

In Lysychansk of the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR), SBU officers together with the UK special services are preparing a provocation, the Interdepartmental Coordination Headquarters for Humanitarian Response said in a statement.

“For this purpose, representatives of the Ukrainian and Western media arrived in the city in advance, who had previously carried out staged photo and video filming in Bucha,” the headquarters warned.

According to the statement, fakes from the Kiev authorities about the alleged “excesses of the Russians” are planned to be widely distributed through the Western media in the near future.

In addition, the special services of Ukraine are planning a provocation with the use of chemicals in the area of the Odessa port of Yuzhny to accuse Russian troops of allegedly striking civilian infrastructure facilities, the Russian Defense Ministry added.

“The most likely scenario of the staging may be an imitation of a missile strike by the Russian Armed Forces on the western naval base of the Ukrainian Navy, as a result of which the port’s refrigeration plant will be blown up,” the statement says.

The Russian Defense Ministry once again pointed out that the Russian military does not strike at the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine and treats the local population humanely.

In early April, the Ukrainian authorities and Western media, including Reuters and AFP, published footage from the Ukrainian city of Bucha, which shows corpses in civilian clothes with their hands tied.

The Russian Defense Ministry called the published photos and videos a provocation and stated that the Russian military was not involved in the killings of civilians. The ministry pointed out that the Russian units left Bucha on March 30 and during the time they controlled the city, “not a single local resident was injured.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the data on the killings of civilians in Bucha is a “staging” of Kiev and its “Western patrons”. Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on what happened in Bucha, recalled the US military strikes on Syria, after the Syrian military was accused of using chemical weapons. According to the president, it later turned out that these accusations were fake. «The same fake and in the Butch»,— he concluded.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned on April 23 that the United States, together with NATO allies, are at the final stage of preparing provocations in Ukraine, which should convince the world community of “Russia’s use of toxic warfare agents and biological agents.”
