The American ambassador in early June ruled out a break in relations with Moscow. “We can’t just break off diplomatic relations and stop talking to each other,” he said. In his opinion, “eventually Russians and Americans will resume normal relations.” He does not expect this to happen in the coming years, but expressed the hope that he will live to see it.
In March last year, after US President Joe Biden answered in the affirmative to the question whether he considered Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “a murderer”, the Russian ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov was summoned to Moscow “for consultations”. And after the introduction of the next US sanctions in Moscow, Sullivan was recommended to return to Washington and “hold detailed, serious consultations” there. In June of that year, after the meeting between Putin and Biden in Geneva, the ambassadors returned to their seats.
At the end of March this year, after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, Sullivan stated that the US administration was not going to close the embassy and recall it to Washington. However, later, in early June, the diplomat did not rule out that the United States and Russia could close their diplomatic missions, although he considers this a “big mistake”.
Antonov, in turn, said that “the remnants of reason there [in the United States] remained”and he has no feeling that the American side is ready to close the embassy.
Due to the aggravation of relations between the countries, the volume of consular services provided at the US Embassy in Moscow is currently limited.
On September 1, the EU Ambassador to Russia Markus Ederer left the post. “I am leaving my post with a calm soul. I think I did what I could,” he said.
