The head of the British General Staff, Tony Radakin, met with Russian military attache Maxim Yelovik as part of efforts to strengthen military communication channels, the department said on Twitter.

“Today I met with the Russian military attache, Colonel Maxim Elovik, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen communication channels between the military of the United Kingdom and the Russian Federation in order to regulate risks and escalation,” the words of the Chief of the General Staff of the country are quoted in the message of the British Ministry of Defense.

The day before, British Prime Minister Liz Truss urged people to listen to “threats” to Russia related to nuclear weapons. “We should not listen to saber rattling and threats that have already become known. Instead, we should continue to increase sanctions against Russia and support Ukrainians,” she said.

According to her, London and Washington as allies face the threat of “autocratic regimes” of China and Russia. Truss expressed hope that the United States will act based on the same position.

Assistant to the US President for Strategic Security Jake Sullivan later said that contacts between Washington and Moscow continue in private, including nuclear security. According to him, the Russian leadership was warned about the catastrophic consequences for the country in the event of the use of nuclear weapons.

These statements were made after President Vladimir Putin, announcing the beginning of partial mobilization in Russia on September 21, said that representatives of NATO countries use “nuclear blackmail” and allow the use of nuclear weapons against Russia. Putin recalled that Russia also possesses such weapons. “To protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal. This is not a bluff,” he said, warning those who threaten Russia with nuclear weapons that “the wind rose may turn in their direction”.

Washington has not yet seen any reasons for taking deterrence measures, but they are monitoring the “strategic configuration” of Russian nuclear weapons. Speaking about this, the coordinator for strategic Communications at the White House National Security Council, John Kirby, called Putin’s statement “unacceptable rhetoric for a nuclear power”.

The press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov, answering a question about the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons by Moscow, pointed out that they are prescribed in the doctrine devoted to the basics of state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence. In particular, the list contains an item on the possible use of nuclear weapons in the event of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is threatened.

Prior to that, he stated that any outcome of the special operation in Ukraine, “of course, is not a reason for the use of nuclear weapons.” Putin has also repeatedly assured that Russia does not threaten anyone with nuclear weapons.
