Finnish newspaper found out about the deadline for transferring gas payments to rubles

The Finnish authorities are preparing to stop gas supplies from Russia on May 21, the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reports, citing government sources.

According to the publication, the Russian Gazprom has given the Finnish state gas company Gasum until May 20 on the issue of transferring gas payments for rubles. According to the newspaper’s sources, the deadline is the same for many other EU countries.

It is possible that on May 21, the supply of Russian pipeline gas to Finland and most of Europe will be stopped, writes Helsingin Sanomat.

At the end of March, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the transfer of all payments for gas supplies in rubles, a measure he instructed to apply to “unfriendly countries”, including Finland, as well as all other EU countries, the USA, Japan, etc. Putin justified his decision by the desire to “abandon the use of all compromised currencies in such calculations”, which he believes should be achieved “in the very near future”. The scheme has been in effect since April 1.

Finland has previously refused to pay for gas under the new scheme. According to the Finnish Minister for European Affairs and Corporate Governance Titti Tuppurainen, the decision was made in accordance with the recommendations of the European Commission, which considered such a measure a violation of contracts. The minister added that Finland is striving to abandon gas imports from Russia as soon as possible.

On April 27, Gazprom announced the suspension of gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria. As explained in the company, “Bulgargaz” (Bulgaria) and PGNiG (Poland) refused to pay for further gas supplies in rubles, as required by Russian legislation. Gazprom also warned that in case of unauthorized withdrawal of Russian gas from transit volumes to third countries, transit supplies will be reduced by this volume. They promised to resume gas transit there at the time of payment made under the new procedure.

At the same time, Bloomberg reported that four European companies have already made payments for gas supplies from Russia in rubles, and ten companies have opened special accounts in Gazprombank. In total, the list of gas buyers from the list of “unfriendly” countries has 23 states, the agency said.
