Scholz called it impossible to achieve peace in Ukraine without supplies

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in his speech on the armed conflict between Moscow and Kiev, said that a cease-fire on the terms of Russia is unacceptable and is equivalent to a “dictated peace”, Tagesschau reports.

Scholz mentioned the rallies held in Germany over the military actions in Ukraine and appealed to both supporters and opponents of providing military assistance to Kiev: some are in favor of strengthening support and increasing the supply of weapons, others are concerned about the escalation of the conflict. The German Chancellor wondered how a “just peace” could be achieved.

“If Ukraine stopped defending itself, it would not be the world, it would be the end of Ukraine. You can’t negotiate with a gun at your temple,” Scholz believes (quoted by Tagesspiegel).

According to the Chancellor, Germany has provided military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 2.6 billion euros, and this is a reasonable amount for the country. He also stated that the arms supplies are based on balanced decisions of the German government, which Berlin is taking, “so that NATO does not become a belligerent party.”

The Russian authorities see the supply of Western weapons, including heavy equipment, as signs of an escalation of the conflict. The Kremlin said that the tanks transferred to Ukraine “will burn”. President Vladimir Putin also promised that Moscow’s response “will not end with the use of armored vehicles”.
