According to the speaker of the State Duma, Russia humanely treats those captured in Ukraine, but if we are talking about war criminals, they must be brought to justice
The State Duma committees were instructed to work out the issue of banning the exchange of war criminals, Chairman of the lower house Vyacheslav Volodin said.
“As for the Nazis, our position here should be unchanged: these are war criminals, and we must do everything to bring them to justice,” he wrote in the Telegram channel.
The issue of banning the exchange of war criminals at a meeting of the State Duma was raised by Deputy Anatoly Wasserman. He proposed to adopt a resolution or a law regulating this topic.
Volodin approved his proposal. “You are making the right offer. Nazi criminals should not be subject to exchange,” he said.
Volodin said that the Russian side humanely treats those who surrendered or were captured, and also promotes their treatment.
On April 21, Vladimir Putin instructed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to cancel the storming of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, where Ukrainian servicemen remain, and ordered it to be completely blocked. The Ministry of Defense stated that militants of the Ukrainian nationalist battalion Azov (recognized in Russia as extremist and banned) and foreign mercenaries are securely blocked on the territory of the plant.

After that, negotiations on the evacuation of civilians from the territory of the enterprise intensified, on May 7 their removal from the plant was completed. According to the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin, there are no civilians left at the plant, but about 1.2 thousand Ukrainian military are hiding there.
The day before, the Ministry of Defense reported that wounded Ukrainian soldiers had begun to be taken out of the territory of “Azovstal”, they were being taken to the hospital of Novoazovsk in the DPR. Prior to that, the battalion commander of the “East” of the People’s Republic, Alexander Khodakovsky, reported that ten military men with white flags had left the territory of the enterprise.
According to the Ministry of Defense, over the past day, 265 soldiers and militants of Azov surrendered, including 51 seriously wounded.
The President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, said the night before that the work on rescuing the military from the plant and their return to the territory controlled by Kiev continues. He stated that Ukraine “needs them alive”. The press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov forwarded to the Ministry of Defense the question whether Russia considers the evacuees from “Azovstal” prisoners of war. He promised that the Russian side would treat them in accordance with international laws.
