The Prosecutor General’s Office demanded to recognize the Ukrainian paramilitary association “Legion”Freedom of Russia” as a terrorist organization and prohibit its activities in Russia, according to the telegram channel of the supervisory authority.

“The Legion was created in Ukraine with the aim of undermining the foundations of the constitutional system of the Russian Federation, overthrowing the government in the country, including by committing terrorist acts, which poses a threat to the security of society and the state,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov sent a lawsuit to the Supreme Court to recognize the formation as terrorist.

«Legion «Freedom of Russia»— a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was created in March 2022, it mainly includes Russians. A source “RIA Novosti” in September reported searches at the moderators of the Legion telegram channel. According to law enforcement agencies, the association was advised by former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev (recognized as a foreign agent).

Ponomarev on the air of ETV+ at the end of October clarified that by that time there were about 500 people in the formation, of whom half were at the front. The legion, according to the ex-deputy, consists of two battalions. He told Deutsche Welle (recognized as a foreign agent) that he was engaged in political negotiations with representatives of different countries and interaction with the media in the interests of the legion.

In January, a resident of the Saratov region was sentenced to five years in a strict regime colony. According to investigators, 23-year-old Kirill Belousov decided to leave for Ukraine to participate in hostilities on the side of Kiev as part of the “Freedom of Russia” Legion.
