The media revealed the identity of the official who lost documents about the destroyer Defender

The official of the British Ministry of Defense, who lost secret documents about the destroyer Defender at a bus stop in Kent, turned out to be 51-year-old Angus Lapsley. Prior to that, he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom. This is written by The Times and The Guardian.

According to them, he did not work for long in the Ministry of Defense, and when it turned out that Lapsley was involved in the loss of documents, he was transferred back to the service in the Foreign Ministry, finding no traces of espionage in his actions.

The publications note that at the time of the incident, he was just applying for the place of the permanent representative of Great Britain to NATO. Now Lapsley’s appointment to this position seems unlikely.

The lost documents were found at the bus stop on June 27, in total there were about 50 sheets in the stack. The papers of the British Ministry of Defense described a possible Russian reaction to the passage of the destroyer Defender off the coast of Crimea. In particular, it said that Russia could react “aggressively”. In total, the British military considered three scenarios for the actions of the Russian side and several options for the passage of the destroyer.

The destroyer Defender entered the Black Sea on June 14 together with the Dutch air defense frigate Evertsen. On June 23, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Defender violated the territorial border of Russia in the Black Sea, near the Crimean cape Fiolent, going 3 km beyond it. Since it did not respond to preliminary warnings, a Russian fighter jet dropped four high-explosive fragmentation bombs on the destroyer’s course, and a Russian patrol ship in the Black Sea opened warning fire in its direction. After that, Defender left the Russian territorial waters.

The British military denied the statement of the Russian Defense Ministry about the warning fire in the direction of Defender. According to the British Ministry of Defense, the ship was making a peaceful passage through the territorial waters of Ukraine. The British military department suggested that the Russian military conducted training shooting in the Black Sea.

The FSB has released a video of the negotiations of the crew of the Russian patrol ship, which confirms that the Russian military has repeatedly called on the British destroyer Defender to change course. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, this information completely refutes the version of London.
