The Lefortovo court of Moscow arrested in absentia the editor-in-chief of The Insider (the Ministry of Justice entered the publication in the register of foreign media agents, and the Prosecutor General’s Office recognized his activities as undesirable) Roman Dobrokhotov (also recognized as a foreign media agent) in the case of illegal border crossing, the press service of the court told RBC.

“A preventive measure was chosen in the form of detention for a period of two months from the moment he crossed the state border of the Russian Federation and handed over to the convoy service of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia or from the moment of his detention on the territory of the Russian Federation,” the court said.

The case of poch. 1 of Article 322 of the Criminal Code was initiated against Dobrokhotov last summer. The materials stated that from July 31 to August 1, he “illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in the direction of the Voronezh and Lugansk regions”. According to the FSB, he crossed the border with Ukraine bypassing the established checkpoints. Prior to that, the Insider editor-in-chief had his passport and equipment seized as part of a libel case in which he is a witness.

At the end of September 2021, the house of Dobrokhotov’s parents, his wife’s apartment and her sister were searched, and the journalist himself was put on the wanted list.

In July of this year, an administrative protocol was drawn up against Dobrokhotov under Article 20.3.3 of the Administrative Code (public actions aimed at discrediting the use of the Armed Forces of Russia, punishment — a fine of 30 thousand to 50 thousand rubles).

In the same month, the court upheld a fine of 500 thousand rubles, imposed by The Insider under part 1 of Article 19.34.1 of the Administrative Code for violating the procedure for the activities of a foreign media agent. The publication received this status in July 2021, and a year later the Prosecutor General’s Office considered that The Insider’s activities “pose a threat to the foundations of the constitutional system and the security of the Russian Federation”.
