Roman Protasevich, the ex-editor-in-chief of Nexta, who was detained on May 23, and his girlfriend Sofya Sapega concluded a pre-trial agreement with the investigation, so they were transferred to house arrest. This is reported by the press service of the Investigative Committee of Belarus.

“The accused give consistent confessions, and in accordance with the law, they previously applied for a pre-trial agreement on cooperation with the investigation. In the petition, they pledged to assist the preliminary investigation in investigating crimes, exposing accomplices, and doing everything possible to make amends for the harm caused by crimes, ” the report says.

Based on this, the investigation considered that the measure of restraint of Protasevich and Sapieha could be changed to house arrest. Earlier, on June 25, the journalist’s father Dmitry Protasevich said that his son was released from the pre-trial detention center and sent under house arrest.

According to him, the young people remain ” under the full control of the authorities, no one has dropped the charges against them.” Protasevich Sr. said that he had not seen his son and could not comment on the actions of the authorities.

Roman Protasevich and Sofia Sapega were detained on May 23 at the Minsk airport. They were removed from a Ryanair flight flying from Athens to Vilnius and urgently landed in Minsk after a report about a bomb on board. The information about the explosives was not confirmed, the Belarusian opposition stated that the turn of the plane and its landing were carried out by the authorities of the republic solely for the sake of detaining Protasevich.

In Belarus, Protasevich is listed as a terrorist, he is accused of organizing mass riots. In addition, a criminal case was opened against Protasevich in the LPR & mdash; the authorities of the unrecognized republic believe that the journalist in 2014–2015 participated in hostilities in the Donbass on the side of Ukraine as part of the Azov battalion.

At a press conference on June 14, Protasevich denied information that he was beaten in the Minsk pre-trial detention center after his arrest. “I feel fine, everything is fine with me, I have no complaints about anything, no one has hit me, no one has touched me,” the journalist said.

He noted that he understands why he was arrested and what he is accused of. Even before that, he reported that he had confessed to the case of organizing mass riots. Protasevich stressed that no one forced him to cooperate with the investigation, it was exclusively voluntary.
