The term of temporary stay in Russia of foreign citizens and stateless persons who do not have a legal basis for this has been extended until September 30, 2021, according to a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin. The document is published on the Kremlin’s website.

Foreigners who arrived in Russia before March 15, 2020 and on June 16 do not have legal grounds to stay in Russia, can settle their legal status or leave Russia until September 30.

“Until September 30, 2021, inclusive, in respect of foreign citizens and stateless persons residing in the territory of the Russian Federation”…> Decisions on administrative expulsion from the Russian Federation in the form of forced expulsion are not taken…& gt;», & mdash; says the decree. This clause does not apply to certain categories of foreigners, in particular those who have been released from prison, advocate a violent change in the foundations of the constitutional order of Russia, support terrorism, and participate in an uncoordinated rally.

The decree will come into force on June 16. The previous similar decree expires on June 15.

The President has repeatedly extended the terms of stay of migrants due to the pandemic. The last time this happened was in mid-December 2020.

By May, the number of migrants who did not leave Russia after the end of their stay in the country reached 1.6 million, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported. “For the period from March 15, 2020 to the present, approximately 1.6 million citizens ended their stay on the territory of the Russian Federation and there was no information in the records of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia about their departure from the Russian Federation. The measures taken made it possible to regulate the legal status of about 400 thousand people, ” the ministry said.

More than 134 thousand people applied for the extension of the visa validity period, of which 7 thousand justified it with anti-coronavirus measures. About 2.5 million people applied for an extension of their temporary stay.

The authorities have repeatedly said that Russia lacks migrant workers in some areas, in particular in agriculture and construction. In early May, Putin said that Russia is making every effort to make life easier for migrant workers from other countries. “We do everything to make people feel comfortable, especially since we currently do not have enough workers in entire sectors of the economy,” he explained.
