Valery Radaev

The governor of the Saratov region, Valery Radaev, announced that he would resign his powers ahead of schedule and would not be nominated for a new term. He is the fourth head of the region in a day to announce his decision to resign from office.

“I have made a decision on the early resignation of the governor. I headed the Saratov Region for ten years. Due to the upcoming election campaign, I will not nominate my candidacy for the next term for election as the head of the region,” Radaev said.

The head of the region said that he plans to focus “on another area of work”, without specifying which one.

Valery Radaev has been the head of the region since 2012, and was re-elected in 2017. He was awarded the Medal of the Order “For Services to the Fatherland” of the second degree, the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honor.

Following him, the head of Mari El, Alexander Evstifeev, announced his resignation. According to him, he appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to accept his resignation due to the expiration of his term of office.

In February, RBC sources reported that Evstifeev, whose five-year term of office expires this year, does not intend to run for a second term. The sources called the reason a personal decision of the head of the region. “He categorically does not want to [continue working as governor],” one of the interlocutors clarified.

Putin announced significant damage from wildfires this year

Significant material damage from wildfires in Russia this year is already obvious. This was stated by President Vladimir Putin at a meeting on the situation with forest fires in the regions of the country, broadcast by the TV channel “Russia 24”.

“Now a number of regions are fighting fires that have arisen in populated areas. Moreover, significant material damage is already obvious. Unfortunately, there are victims among citizens,” he said.

The Head of State also suggested discussing and taking additional measures to make the situation with wildfires in the regions less acute. “I think it is necessary to set a target indicator that can be used to evaluate both the efficiency of work and a specific result, namely, the reduction of the area of forest fires for each subject of the Federation and the country as a whole,” Putin said.

According to the president, among other things, large forest fires undermine efforts to preserve the climate, so the issue is fundamental for Russia and the whole world.

Acting head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Alexander Chupriyan, speaking at the meeting, clarified that forest fires destroyed almost 1.3 thousand buildings in the Kurgan region, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Kemerovo, Irkutsk, Omsk and Novosibirsk regions, 16 people became victims, 18 more were injured. At the same time, he added that to date, fires do not threaten settlements and economic facilities, all threats have been eliminated.

In turn, the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov informed the president that the fixed area covered by fire in the forests is one and a half times less than last year. “For today’s treble, this is 270 thousand hectares against 400 thousand last year. And this is despite the fact that the Far East, the Urals and Siberia have caught fire on average for a month,” the minister noted.

Kozlov clarified that this year 14.2 billion rubles have been allocated to fight forest fires, which is 8.2 billion more than in previous years. «All federal money for fires «is colored». And if the region does not burn this year, then funds can be redistributed to other forest protection measures. For example, the overhaul of equipment”,” added the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Since the beginning of spring, forest fires have started in many regions of the country. According to the data of the Aviation Security Service, as of May 10, there were 101 forest fires on the territory of Russia on an area of 12713 hectares. The most active fires were recorded in the Krasnoyarsk Territory (23), the Amur Region (13), as well as the Khabarovsk Territory (12). The emergency mode has been introduced in two subjects of Russia to date: on the entire territory of the Kurgan region and in the Askiz municipal district of the Republic of Khakassia.

On May 8, the Federal Forestry Agency told TASS that since the beginning of the year, the fire has passed more than 251 thousand hectares of the territory of Russia, and the area of forest fires as a whole has decreased by 32.6% compared to 2021. “Since the beginning of the year and to date, the area of forest fires in the country has decreased by 32.6% compared to 2021 and amounts to 251.7 thousand hectares, of which 140.9 thousand hectares are covered with forest,” the report says.

According to the agency, the main causes of all spring forest fires are non-compliance with fire safety rules by the local population: burning of dry grass in fields, garbage in suburban areas, un extinguished fires, discarded cigarette butts and matches. Also, the reason is man-made factors— electrical closures, broken power line wires.

In 2021, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 3210 wildfires occurred in the country, their area was more than 8.5 million hectares. The main fires were recorded: in Yakutia – 1696 fires with an area of 8 million hectares, in the Irkutsk region – 590 fires with an area of 462 thousand hectares, in the Tyumen region – 686 fires with an area of almost 194 thousand hectares.

In September, the head of the forest program of the Russian branch of Greenpeace, Alexey Yaroshenko, said that 2021 was a record year for the total area of forest fires in Russia since the beginning of the XXI century. According to him, last year the fire damaged 18.1 million hectares.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they do not plan to close Russian embassies in Europe

Russia does not intend to voluntarily close diplomatic missions in European countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said, RIA Novosti reports.

“It’s not in our tradition. Therefore, we believe that the work of diplomatic missions is important,” he answered the question about such a possibility against the background of the introduction of Western sanctions.

At the same time, Grushko stressed that Moscow did not start a “diplomatic war, a campaign of expulsions.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they do not plan to close Russian embassies in Europe

After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, dozens of European states, as well as Japan, announced the expulsion of Russian diplomats. The Russian side has already responded to the steps of some of them with retaliatory expulsions of employees of diplomatic missions.

One of the latest was the expulsion of seven employees of the Danish Embassy in Russia on May 5.This was a response to Denmark’s decision to declare 15 employees of the Russian embassy persona non grata, as well as the provision of military assistance to Kiev by the Danish authorities.

The Kingdom decided to expel 15 Russian diplomats on April 5. The country’s foreign minister, Jeppe Kofod, said they were engaged in espionage. He stressed that Denmark wants to protect its security, and the decision was made after “a large number of other European countries”.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Twitter that she had made progress in negotiations with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on sanctions and energy security.

Von der Leyen promised to organize a videoconference with regional players “to strengthen regional cooperation in the field of oil infrastructure”.

The Hungarian side also reported that the European Commission and Budapest have made “some progress” on the issue of sanctions against the Russian oil sector. As stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, “we can talk about a small step forward.”

“However, much more needs to be done so that in the future we can change our position,” he clarified.

Hungary refuses to support the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil supplies to the European Union. Szijjarto explained that the ban would undermine the security of the country’s energy supply and its economy. “Of course, we will not allow this, because we cannot allow anyone to destroy the results of the many years of efforts of the Hungarian people, our selfless work,” the minister said.

He also claimed that Budapest would not vote for the sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia, which is planned to include an embargo in its current form. According to the minister, Hungary stands for exceptions to the embargo on the import of crude oil through pipelines.

In turn, Secretary of State for International Relations in the Office of the Prime Minister of Hungary Zoltan Kovacs noted that the EU has not developed any plan to preserve the energy security of EU members and does not give any guarantees.

Депутаты крупнейшего города на юге Чехии Чески-Будеёвице приняли решение лишить статуса почетного гражданина города первую женщину-космонавта Валентину Терешкову. Об этом сообщает Budejcka Drbna.

Johnson questioned Russia’s victory in Ukraine

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged Russia’s heroic role in defeating Nazism in Europe, but called its actions in Ukraine a “mistake” that did not have a clear strategic goal *

Russia played a heroic role in the defeat of Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler, but it is unlikely that it will be able to win in Ukraine, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a conversation with the Evening Standard.

“Russians have the right to celebrate their heroic role in the defeat of Nazism,” he said.

At the same time, the head of the British government called Russia’s actions in Ukraine a “mistake” that did not have a clear strategic goal. In his opinion, it is “impossible for Russia to win” in the fighting that began in Ukraine.

Johnson doubted Russia's victory in Ukraine

Johnson, along with other Western leaders, has repeatedly criticized the Russian special operation. At the same time, in April, he admitted that Russia could win in Ukraine. “The sad thing is that this is a real possibility,” Johnson said. He also expressed the opinion that Russia has a huge army, and also suggested that the fighting in Ukraine could continue until the end of 2023.

On May 8, the day when the end of World War II and the liberation of the continent from Nazism are celebrated in Europe, the Big Seven (G7: USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan) issued a statement in which they said that Russia should not be allowed to win the Ukraine.

“We are obliged to do this for the sake of the memory of all those who fought for freedom during World War II, to continue fighting for it today for the sake of the people of Ukraine, Europe and the world community,” the text of the document says.

The G7 online meeting was attended by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who was assured of solidarity and support by the Big Seven.

Commenting on the G7 statement, Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said that the Western countries recognized the successes of Russia by their determination to “prevent victory”. He also expressed the opinion that Moscow “destroyed” plans for NATO expansion to the east. At the same time, at the end of April, Finland announced plans to apply for NATO membership in the coming weeks, and Sweden plans to take a similar step. The Times wrote that both countries could become members of the alliance in the summer.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special operation on “demilitarization” and “denazification” of Ukraine on February 24. He also explained its need to protect the population of Donbass from “genocide” by the Kiev authorities. The Ukrainian authorities, in response to the special operation, declared martial law and general mobilization.

At the end of March, the Ministry of Defense announced the fulfillment of tasks in the Kiev and Chernihiv directions and announced that the main task of the Russian military is the complete liberation of Donbass.

At the same time, Moscow and Kiev are negotiating a peaceful settlement. The last face-to-face meeting of the delegations took place at the end of March, when the Ukrainian side handed over a number of proposals to the Russian side, including on the neutral and nuclear-free status of Ukraine, as well as security guarantees for Kiev, which do not affect Crimea and Donbass.

Later, the Russian authorities sent Ukraine reciprocal proposals, but, as Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, there was no reaction to them. The fact that negotiations with Kiev have reached an impasse was also reported by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On May 9, the head of the delegation at the talks with Ukraine, Assistant to the President of Russia Vladimir Medinsky, said that the dialogue in the online format continues, but for a new meeting, more specifics are needed.

Bloomberg learned about the EU’s plan to reject the ban on the transportation of Russian oil

Ga significant role in the decision to abandon the ban on the transportation of Russian oil by EU vessels was played by the lack of a unified position among the G7 countries, the agency writes

Bloomberg found out about the EU plan to reject the ban on the transportation of Russian oil

The European Union intends to soften the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, in particular, to abandon the proposed ban on the transportation of Russian oil to third countries by EU vessels, Bloomberg writes, citing sources.

At the same time, the ban on insurance of flights of ships with Russian oil is still being discussed and will be a serious obstacle to exports if it is approved, sources say.

The lack of a unified position among the G7 countries played a major role in the decision to abandon the ban on the transportation of Russian oil by European vessels. Thus, Greece, whose economy largely depends on shipping, advocated the exclusion of this provision from the sanctions package, the agency reported.

However, according to sources, the remaining provisions in the package will still significantly complicate Moscow’s situation, since the ban on providing insurance will cover most of the world fleet of oil tankers carrying Russian oil.

On the eve of Bloomberg reported that the EU permanent representatives met to discuss new sanctions against Russia, but did not reach an agreement.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said earlier that the sixth package of sanctions should include the rejection of Russian oil by the end of 2022 and the disconnection of a number of banks from SWIFT. Bloomberg and Reuters also reported that Brussels proposes to prohibit European courts from providing services related to the transportation of Russian oil to third countries.

In order for the package to be adopted, all 27 EU countries must agree on it. As the agency wrote, the participants of the meeting failed to get Hungary’s consent to ban the import of Russian oil, and Greece and Cyprus have not yet supported restrictions on oil transportation.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out that the European Union does not have a unified position on the issue of adopting part of the sanctions against Russia. He called on the EU to take a unified position.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on May 6 that Budapest would not allow the European Union to impose an embargo on Russian oil, as this would undermine the security of the country’s energy supply and its economy.

According to him, the country is ready to defend its economic achievements until the EU’s plan to impose an embargo on oil from Russia “collapses”.

During the attempt to capture the island, more than 50 Ukrainian saboteurs were destroyed, the bodies of 24 soldiers remained on the shore, the ministry added.

“As a result of the competent actions of the Russian armed forces unit located on the island, the Ukrainian provocation was thwarted. The enemy suffered heavy losses,” the ministry said in a statement.

At the request of Roskomnadzor, RBC provides data on the details of the military operation in Ukraine based on information from Russian official sources.

During the attempts of attacks by the Ukrainian side in the area of Zmeiny, Russian forces shot down three Su-24 fighters, one Su-27, three Mi-8 helicopters with troops on board, as well as a Mi-24 helicopter, the Defense Ministry said. 29 drones were also destroyed, including eight strike “Bayraktar TB-2”, the ministry added.

The Ministry of Defense called the attempts to land on Snake Island a provocation planned on the direct instructions of the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, with the participation of advisers from the United States and Great Britain.

Snake Island is part of the Kiliysky district of the Odessa region. It became part of Ukraine in accordance with the Paris Agreement of 1947 after the transfer of Bessarabia to the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zmeiny became the subject of a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Romania. The International Court of Justice of the United Nations in The Hague in 2009 recognized the Snake Island, and not a rock, as Romania sought.

On February 25, the second day of the Russian special operation, the Ukrainian authorities reported that they had lost control of the island. On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that 82 people had laid down their weapons in the area of the island of Zmeiny and voluntarily surrendered to the Russian armed forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation to “demilitarize” and “denazify” Ukraine on February 24. Kiev responded by declaring martial law and general mobilization.

At the end of March, the Ministry of Defense announced the completion of tasks in the Kiev and Chernihiv directions and the regrouping of troops. From that moment on, the main task of the Russian military was the “complete liberation of Donbass”, the ministry reported.

Scholz said that Russia forced Germany to supply weapons to Ukraine

Germany is helping Ukraine because Russian President Putin has “put the peace in Europe at risk,” German Chancellor Scholz stressed

Scholz said that Russia forced Germany to supply weapons to Ukraine

Olaf Scholz

Russia leaves Germany no choice but to supply weapons to Ukraine. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the congress of the Association of German Trade Unions, reports Münchner Merkur.

«[Russian President Vladimir Putin] Putin leaves us no other choice,” he said. According to Scholz, the Russian leader has threatened peace in Europe, so Berlin is helping Kiev.

The German Chancellor stressed that Putin violated the principle of inviolability of borders in Europe “for his revanchist project of creating the Russian Empire”. If Berlin accepted this, it would strengthen Moscow even more, Scholz concluded.

On the eve of the German Chancellor assured that the country will not make any decisions under which NATO will take part in the conflict in Ukraine.

At the end of April, the lower house of the German parliament by a majority of votes supported a document calling on the government to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine.

However, Scholz considered that Berlin should not make hasty decisions about sending heavy weapons to Ukraine. He noted that Germany will not supply Kiev with Western-made combat tanks until the United States and allies do it.

The leader of the opposition CDU party, Friedrich Merz, criticized Scholz in “cowardice” in connection with his cautious position on military assistance to Ukraine.

Also, the Chancellor’s policy on this issue was criticized by the Ambassador of Ukraine Andriy Melnyk. So, he considered that Germany decided too late to transfer Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled guns (ZSU) to Kiev.

By the end of April, Germany supplied Ukraine with 2.5 thousand anti-aircraft missiles, 900 anti-tank grenade launchers with ammunition of 3 thousand shells, 100 machine guns and 15 bunker launchers with 50 rockets, 100 thousand hand grenades, 2 thousand mines and more than 16 million rounds of ammunition.

Russia has repeatedly warned Western countries that convoys with similar cargoes on the territory of Ukraine will become legitimate targets for the Russian military.

Speaking at the Victory Day Parade on May 9, Putin called the operation in Ukraine the only way to prevent aggression against its own territory and recalled that Moscow had offered Washington and NATO to agree on security guarantees.
