The Lithuanian authorities dismiss their ambassador to Russia, Eitvydas Bayarunas, reports LRT.

Bayarunas should leave the post on June 1.

In addition, the Consulate General of the Republic in St. Petersburg will be liquidated from June 7.

On April 21, the Ambassadors of Latvia and Estonia, Maris Riekstins and Margus Laidre, as well as the Charge d’affaires of Lithuania, Virginia Umbrasene, were summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. Moscow announced its decision to close the Consulate General of Latvia in St. Petersburg and the consulate in Pskov, the Consulate General of Estonia in St. Petersburg and its office in Pskov, as well as the Consulate General of Lithuania in St. Petersburg.

Such a decision, as explained in the department, was made in response to the closure of the Russian consulates General in Klaipeda, Liepaja, Daugavpils, Narva and the office of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Tartu, as well as taking into account the provision of military assistance by the authorities of these countries to the Kiev regime and their cover-up of crimes of Ukrainian nationalists against the civilian population of Donbass and Ukraine».

“The heads and other consular officials of the specified Estonian and Latvian consular missions are declared persona non grata, and consular officials and employees of the administrative and technical staff of the specified institutions who are not citizens of the Russian Federation are unacceptable,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Germany warned of an increase in gas prices due to Russia’s retaliatory sanctions

Rossia approved the sanctions list, which included the former “daughters” of Gazprom. According to the head of the German Ministry of Economy, due to sanctions, Germany will be forced to conclude new gas supply contracts, possibly at a higher price

Germany warned of an increase in gas prices due to Russia's retaliatory sanctions

Russia’s retaliatory sanctions against Gazprom Germania GmbH and its subsidiaries mean the need to conclude new contracts, possibly at higher prices, said Vice Chancellor of Germany, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck in the Bundestag, reports FAZ.

“The inclusion of Gazprom Germania’s daughters in the sanctions lists means that they must re-conclude supply contracts. These contracts may be concluded at higher prices,” the deputy head of government noted.

According to Habek, Russia’s sanctions have deprived Germany of 10 million cubic meters of gas per day, but the German government has already developed a plan to replace supplies.

RBC sent a request to a representative of Gazprom.

In early May, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Russia’s response to sanctions. The document states that they are introduced in order to protect the national interests of the country and in response to unfriendly and contrary to international law actions of the United States and the states that have joined them, aimed at “illegal deprivation” or restriction of property rights of Russia, Russians and Russian legal entities.

On May 11, the Russian government approved a list of foreign companies that have fallen under retaliatory Russian sanctions. The list includes former Western “daughters” of Gazprom, including Gazprom Germania. This company manages the former European assets of Gazprom, which are also included in the sanctions list: Gazprom NGV Europe, Wingas, Astora, Gazprom Marketing & Trading, Vemex and others.

It is prohibited to make transactions with sub-sanctioned enterprises, including those that provide for the entry into Russian ports of vessels associated with these legal entities, as well as making payments and transactions with securities in favor of these companies.

On May 12, Habek reported that some “daughters” of Gazprom Germania GmbH stopped receiving gas due to retaliatory sanctions. According to him, German power engineers are monitoring the situation and have prepared in advance. “The market can compensate for the lack of supplies from Russia,” the minister said.

At the end of March, Germany introduced the first of three levels of the emergency warning regime in gas supply. It assumes maximum reduction of consumption and monitoring of the situation on the gas market.

The first level of the emergency warning mode is introduced if there are signs of a future deterioration of the gas supply situation. If they are implemented, a second level is introduced. The third is announced in case of a significant violation of the gas supply. In this case, the Government takes measures to provide gas to citizens, hospitals, fire services and the police.

The head of the Pentagon said that no one wants a conflict between NATO and Russia

According to Lloyd Austin, Moscow does not want such a clash either. If Russia does decide to attack any of the NATO members, it will “change everything,” the Pentagon chief warned

The head of the Pentagon said that no one wants a conflict between NATO and Russia

Lloyd Austin

If Russia decides to attack one of the NATO member countries, it will “radically change everything”, no one would want such a development of events, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said at a congressional hearing. A fragment of his speech is published by Newsweek.

«But <...> my point of view <..."The fact is that Russia does not want to fight with NATO," the Pentagon chief said. He explained his assumption by the military power of the alliance: NATO has 1.9 million soldiers «the most advanced capabilities <...> in the field of aviation, ships, types of weapons ». “This is not the battle that he [Putin] wanted,” Austin believes.

According to the head of the Pentagon, the clash between Russia and the alliance will quickly develop into another kind of struggle and no one wants to see it.

Austin stressed at the hearing that Russia “remains a strong threat that requires close and constant coordination within NATO to prevent further aggression in Europe.” Moscow’s nuclear arsenal poses significant problems for the United States, he noted.

After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the authorities of the United States and other countries of the North Atlantic Alliance stressed that they did not want a war with Russia. In March, the administration of US President Joe Biden stated that he seeks to avoid a conflict with Russia at any cost and is determined to resolve issues diplomatically. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed a similar position.

Moscow sees Kiev’s support by Western states as a threat and attempts to prolong military operations in Ukraine, in particular criticizing the supply of foreign weapons to Ukraine. On May 12, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that “pumping Ukraine with Western weapons, “sending mercenaries” and other NATO actions increase the likelihood of a direct conflict between Russia and the alliance. “Such a conflict always has a risk of turning into a full-fledged nuclear war,” he warned.

Expressen learned about Sweden’s plans to apply to NATO on May 16

ShTurkey can apply for NATO membership as early as Monday, May 16, sources told Expressen. The President and Prime Minister of Finland have already made a statement about the need to join the alliance as soon as possible

Expressen found out about Sweden's plans to apply to NATO on May 16

Sweden plans to apply for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance on Monday, May 16. This is reported by the local newspaper Expressen with reference to its sources in the government and the calendar of the parliament.

“On Monday, the Prime Minister will convene an additional meeting of the government, at which a historic decision will be made. Immediately after the meeting, an application for NATO membership will be submitted, unless something unforeseen happens,” the publication says.

An extraordinary session of the Swedish parliament is also scheduled for Monday, where the country’s security policy will be discussed, the publication indicates. At the same time, a report by Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson was previously listed as a topic of discussion on the parliament’s website.

The Swedish government will publish its security report after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine on Friday, May 13. On Sunday, the Social Democrats — the party of the Prime Minister of Sweden— will declare their position on the issue of membership in NATO, the publication clarifies. It is also expected that the Left Party and the Green Party, which oppose NATO membership, will make reservations about membership in the alliance on Friday, May 13.

The publication notes that the question of what decision the government will eventually make remains open until the meeting itself, but the interlocutors of Expressen expect that NATO membership will be supported.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto is scheduled to visit Sweden on Tuesday, May 17, during which he will hold talks with Andersson.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin issued a joint statement on the morning of May 11, stating that the country should immediately apply for NATO membership. This will strengthen the security of the country and the entire alliance, they believe.

Earlier, Reuters reported that NATO is expecting applications from Finland and Sweden in the coming days. According to the agency’s interlocutors, they plan to approve them quickly, as the Russian special operation in Ukraine forces a radical rethink of the European security system.

According to diplomats and sources in NATO, the applications of Sweden and Finland to join the bloc will be approved either before or during the summit of the North Atlantic Alliance, which is scheduled to take place on June 29 and 30 in Madrid, the agency reported.

After that, it will take a year to ratify the decision on Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO; according to the agency, during this time the alliance intends to strengthen its presence in Northern Europe and increase the number of exercises.

Before applying to join the bloc, Sweden and Finland have the status of NATO partner states. The bloc’s members are 30 countries, including Denmark and Norway.

Moscow, commenting on the plans of Finland and Sweden to join NATO, warned of the risk of “the most undesirable consequences” of this step. According to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, the accession of previously neutral Finland and Sweden to NATO will lead to a radical change in the military-political situation.

Grushko also said that the length of the Russian-Finnish border is 1.3 thousand km. “We will have to take measures to ensure our security and defense that we deem necessary, this is the alpha and omega of military construction,” Grushko said, answering a question about the possibility of deploying the Russian nuclear arsenal in the Baltic Sea region.

The Prime Minister and the President of Finland called for an urgent application to NATO

In their opinion, membership in NATO will strengthen Finland’s security, and the country, in turn, will strengthen the alliance. The application for NATO membership should be submitted immediately, they believe

The Prime Minister and the President of Finland called for an urgent application to NATO

Sanna Marin (left) and Sauli Niinisto

Why Finland decided to join NATO

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that Finland should immediately apply for membership in NATO, their joint statement was published on the website of the country’s State Council.

“NATO membership will strengthen Finland’s security. By becoming a member of NATO, Finland will strengthen the entire defense alliance. Finland should immediately apply for membership in NATO. We hope that the steps at the national level necessary to implement this decision will be taken quickly in the coming days,” the President and the Prime Minister said.

Niinisto and Marin explained that it took time to form an agreed position on NATO membership in parliament and society, as well as to discuss with the alliance and Sweden, which also intends to join it.

At the end of March, the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat conducted a survey according to which 61% of Finns believe that Finland should join the alliance, 16% are against, 23% found it difficult to answer. On May 11, 73% of respondents have already expressed their support.

When Finland becomes the 31st member of NATO

Reuters, citing sources, previously reported that NATO expects applications to join the alliance from Finland and Sweden in the coming days. According to the agency’s interlocutors, they will be approved quickly, as the Russian operation forces a radical rethink of the European security system.

The newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, in turn, wrote that the announcement by the President of Finland of his position on May 12 will be considered as an “official confirmation of Helsinki’s readiness” to join NATO.

The Swedish edition of Expressen, citing sources, reported that Stockholm intends to apply for NATO membership on Monday. According to him, an additional meeting of the government will be held this day, at which a final decision will be made. Immediately after that, it is planned to submit an application.

Finland and Helsinki now have the status of NATO partner states.

Russia has warned states about the deterioration of the security situation in the event of joining the alliance. Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev noted that in this case, the length of NATO’s land borders with Russia will more than double. “Naturally, these borders will have to be strengthened. To seriously strengthen the grouping of land forces and air defense, to deploy significant naval forces in the waters of the Gulf of Finland,” he explained, adding that as a result, “no nuclear-free status of the Baltic can be discussed anymore.” The balance must be restored.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, stated that the meaning of NATO’s existence is a geopolitical confrontation with Russia, therefore, if Finland and Sweden become members of the alliance, they will also become a space of confrontation.

What are the defensive forces of Finland

In 2021, according to official data, 19781 servicemen, of which 883 were women, performed military service.

Defense spending has been growing over the past 30 years. In 2021, they reached €5 billion.

In 1994, Finland began cooperation with NATO under the Partnership for Peace program. Since then, the country’s defensive forces have been developing according to the standards of the alliance.

The possibility of applying for membership in NATO first appeared in the report on security and defense policy in 2004, in 2007, the government program for the first time said that Finland “reserves the right to apply to NATO”.

Serbia to convene the Security Council over Kosovo’s bid to join the Council of Europe

NForcing Kosovo to apply for membership in the Council of Europe violates the UN Security Council resolution and other agreements, Vucic said. Earlier, he promised that Belgrade would immediately respond to Pristina’s actions and “show teeth”

Serbia will assemble the Security Council because of Kosovo's application to join the Council of Europe

Alexander Vucic

Serbia will convene a meeting of the country’s Security Council in connection with the application of partially recognized Kosovo to join the Council of Europe, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said.

The intention to apply for membership in the Council of Europe was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo Donika Gervalla-Schwartz, Vucic told reporters after a dinner organized in Brussels for the leaders of the Western Balkans by the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrel.

“I said that this is a violation not only of the principles of public international law, but also of the norms of some agreements, including UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the Washington Agreements (the agreement on the normalization of economic relations between Serbia and Kosovo, concluded in Washington in 2020.— RBC)»,— quotes the Serbian president Dnevnik.rs .

“We will start reacting politically. If someone thinks they can blackmail us and break Serbia <..."gt; it won't be that easy," he added.

On May 6, Vucic promised that Belgrade would give an answer on the same day when it learns that Pristina has officially applied for membership in the Council of Europe. According to the Serbian leader, “the reaction will be much stronger than they think”: “Believe me, we will show you teeth”. On the same day, the Kosovo news agency RTK reported that an influential European country, whose name was not given, was ready to send an invitation to the Council of Europe to Pristina.

In March, the analytical center “European Stability Initiative” (European Stability Initiative) called on Kosovo to apply for membership in the Council of Europe after Russia announced its decision to withdraw from the organization, Euractiv writes. The Center believes that the republic has every chance to join the Council of Europe, given that 34 of its 46 members recognize the independence of Kosovo.

Kosovo is a member of the World Bank, the IMF, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Olympic Committee; the partially recognized republic is not a member of the UN, WTO and other international organizations.

Kosovo declared its independence in 2008, before that it was an autonomous republic within Serbia. Kosovo has been recognized by most EU countries and more than a hundred UN member states. Serbia, China, Iran and a number of other countries do not recognize Kosovo as a separate State. Russia also does not recognize Kosovo as a separate state, and the Russian diplomatic chancellery, which is a subdivision of the embassy in Belgrade, operates in Pristina.

Belgorod governor reported the death of a man during shelling from Ukraine

During the shelling, which occurred, according to the head of the region Vyacheslav Gladkov, from Ukraine, three people were also wounded and a house was partially destroyed

Belgorod governor reported the death of a man during shelling from Ukraine

Vyacheslav Gladkov

One person was killed and three wounded in the shelling of the village of Solokhi in the Belgorod region, the head of the region Vyacheslav Gladkov said in his Telegram channel.

“According to confirmed information, at this moment one person has died, died in an ambulance, and three wounded, they are receiving all the necessary assistance,” the governor wrote.

He called the situation “the most difficult for the entire time of the shelling”.

Earlier, the authorities of the Russian regions did not report deaths in such attacks.

Gladkov reported on the shelling of the village of Solokhi in the Belgorod region, which is located a few kilometers from the border with the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, on the evening of May 11. Then he clarified that one person was injured. The shelling, according to the governor, was carried out by Ukraine.

During the shelling, one house was partially destroyed and a reed near the settlement caught fire. Firefighters arrived at the scene.

The village of Solokhi is located about 40 km west of the center of Belgorod.

The regional authorities reported shelling of border villages from Ukraine in May and April. On May 5, according to Gladkov, the settlements of Zhuravlevka and Nehoteevka were shelled. Then there were no casualties, a house and a garage were destroyed in Nehoteevka.

On April 25, these two villages also came under fire. There were no casualties in Nehoteevka, two people were injured in Zhuravlevka.

On the morning of April 1, a fire broke out at an oil depot in Belgorod, later the governor of the region reported that it was caused by an airstrike from two helicopters of the armed forces of Ukraine. According to him, they entered the territory of Russia at low altitudes. As a result of the fire, two people were injured, there were no fatalities.

Shelling from Ukrainian territory was also reported in other border regions. In particular, in the Bryansk region on April 29, a branch of the FSB border department was fired from the territory of Ukraine. No one was injured during the shelling, but water and electricity supply networks were damaged. Also, according to the Investigative Committee, on April 14, two Mi-8 helicopters of the armed forces of Ukraine carried out at least six airstrikes on residential buildings in the village of Klimovo, eight people were injured.

In the Kursk region, on April 23, a checkpoint on the Russian border was fired from mortars from the territory of Ukraine. After the shelling, the Rosselkhoznadzor premises caught fire. There were no wounded or dead. Also in early April, from the territory of Ukraine, they tried to fire a mortar at the border crossing “Sudzha”, but the mines did not reach the territory of Russia.

Due to the current situation, the authorities of six regions bordering Ukraine announced the introduction of a high level of terrorist danger from April 11. Such a regime has been introduced in the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk regions, in two border areas of the Voronezh Region, in the north of Crimea and in several districts of the Krasnodar Territory.

The special regime involves the intensive work of all law enforcement agencies, and residents of the regions are advised to avoid mass crowds, always take an identity card with them and be vigilant.

There are three levels of terrorist danger in total: blue (elevated), yellow (high) and red (critical). Yellow is entered if there is confirmed information about the real possibility of a terrorist attack, it follows from the classification of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee.

Unknown persons poured red paint on the building of the Polish Embassy in Moscow, the Onet publication reports. Embassy staff are waiting for the police to arrive.

A video of the incident was published by the Telegram channel “Rise”.

The footage shows how three men approach the entrance to the embassy from the side of Bolshoy Tishinsky Lane and take out containers with paint. One of them doused the sign at the entrance, the other splashed paint on the window of the entrance. Another man was filming what was happening.
