Ex-US Ambassador Sullivan called his wife’s illness the reason for leaving Russia

DJon Sullivan resigned from his post and left Russia on September 4, and the next day his wife, who had been ill with cancer for a long time, died. The diplomat explained that the decision to leave is not related to either the conflict in Ukraine or Biden’s policy

Ex-US Ambassador Sullivan called his wife's illness the reason for leaving Russia

John Sullivan

John Sullivan left the post of US ambassador to Russia due to his wife’s illness. He told this to the Politico journalist Nahal Tusi, and he wrote it on Twitter.

Tusi explained that Sullivan’s wife Grace Rodriguez had cancer. She has been ill for a long time, and over the past week her condition has deteriorated sharply. On September 5, Rodriguez died.

In a conversation with a journalist, the diplomat stressed that his decision to leave had nothing to do with either the Russian military operation in Ukraine or the policy of the administration of US President Joe Biden.

Sullivan left Moscow on September 4. The American embassy said that after leaving, he will finish a forty-year career in public service.

The diplomat has been the US ambassador to Moscow since December 2019. After Sullivan’s departure, the State Department said that it is now extremely important to maintain diplomatic contacts with Russia. The representative of the ministry explained that the departure of the ambassador was part of a routine diplomatic rotation and that the candidacy of a successor would be announced in the near future. Until then, the American diplomatic mission will be headed by Deputy Ambassador Elizabeth Rood.

At the end of March, after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Sullivan said that the US administration was not going to close the embassy and recall it to Washington. The ambassador, however, did not rule out that the United States and Russia could close their diplomatic missions against the background of worsening relations, although this would be a big mistake. The Russian Foreign Ministry in August did not rule out the possibility of severing relations with the United States if they recognize Moscow as a “country” sponsor of terrorism.

NYT reported on Russia’s purchases of “millions of shells and missiles” from the DPRK

The New York Times: US intelligence reported on Russia’s purchases of weapons from the DPRK, according to a source of The New York Times, we are talking about short-range missiles and artillery shells

NYT reported on Russia's purchases of

Russia buys “millions of artillery shells and missiles” from North Korea, The New York Times reported, citing US intelligence data. The Associated Press wrote about it.

Intelligence provided few details about the volume and timing of deliveries, as well as about the weapons themselves, the newspaper writes, pointing to the lack of an opportunity to independently verify the information. At the same time, an unnamed US government official told the newspaper that in addition to short-range missiles and artillery shells, Russia will try to purchase additional equipment from the DPRK.

RBC sent a request to the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation and the Department of Information and Mass Communications of the Ministry of Defense.

In August, The Washington Post, citing sources, wrote that Russia had received a batch of Iranian drones. Russian cargo planes with drones on board, according to American intelligence, took off from Iran on August 19. The publication claimed that we are talking about two types of drones that can carry ammunition.

After the transfer of the drones, there were failures in their work, the publication wrote, citing employees of the security service of the United States and friendly countries. “There are several errors in the system. The Russians were dissatisfied,” the interlocutor of the newspaper said.

The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov called the publication’s article “stuffing”. The Iranian authorities have not confirmed these data, and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that Vladimir Putin did not discuss the delivery of drones during his visit to Tehran.

The Foreign Ministry asked the EU for a transcript of Borrel’s speech about “fascist Russia”

PAccording to Lavrov, Moscow has not yet received a full recording of the speech of the head of EU diplomacy in Spanish. Brussels claims that Borrel’s words were translated into English by mistake and in fact he did not call Russia “fascist”

The Foreign Ministry requested from the EU a transcript of Borrel's speech about

Sergey Lavrov

If it is confirmed that the High Representative of the European Union for International Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrel, really called Russia “fascist”, Moscow will have “very big questions about how to continue doing business”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference (broadcast on YouTube channel of the department).

«He (Borrel. — RBC) not just did not argue with the deputy who allowed himself such impermissible statements. Mr. Borrel said, answering his question: “We do not yet have a concrete plan on how to defeat fascist Russia and the fascist regime.” That is, the goal is not in doubt, they just haven’t come up with a concrete plan yet,” the minister stressed. According to him, this is not the first time that Borrel, instead of using diplomatic methods, suggests “defeating Russia on the battlefield, then increasing arms supplies to Ukraine.”

Lavrov noted that Borrel’s office explained shortly after his statement that it was a translation error from Spanish into English. The Russian side has requested a transcript of the speech in Spanish, but has not yet received it.

“We will seek clarity, complete clarity, and if we do not receive this transcript in Spanish today, we will draw the appropriate conclusions,” the Foreign Minister promised.

Borrel made his statement at the inter-parliamentary conference in Prague. The video was published on the portal of the European Commission. During the speech, the diplomat switched to his native Spanish, after which the sound of his speech was turned off in the broadcast, a simultaneous translation track into English was launched instead. According to this translation, Borrel stated that the EU does not yet have a concrete plan on how to defeat fascist Russia and its fascist regime.

The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, said that in his own words Borrel completely reset himself as a diplomat, so now his judgments about Russia “cannot be relevant.”

The representative of the European External Relations Service, Peter Stano, explained to TASS that there was a translation error, but in fact Borrel said: “As one of the deputies said, who claimed that the goal of [the EU] is to defeat fascist Russia and its fascist regime. I was asked about it, but it’s not my task. My task is more modest:to help Ukraine together, as well as to continue discussions with our international partners and effectively apply sanctions as they were adopted.

Estonian MP Marko Mikelson, who spoke before Borrel, really said: “We are all threatened by fascist Russia, as many political analysts such as Timothy Snyder and others around the world say. And we have to fight this reality.” Between Mickelson and Borrel , there were also severalparliamentarians, and in the translation into English it is not indicated in any way that the head of EU diplomacy responds precisely to the remark of the representative of Estonia.

Orban made concessions to the EU for the sake of €5.8 billion in aid

In In April, the European Commission launched the rule of law mechanism in relation to Hungary. This allows you to block the allocation of funds from the EU budget and funds to member countries that, according to Brussels, use them for other purposes

Orban made concessions to the EU for the sake of assistance for €5.8 billion

Viktor Orban

The Hungarian government has approved the creation of an independent body to fight corruption and instructed to create a system for evaluating public procurement, the newspaper Nepszava writes, which indicates that these decisions are related to the claims of the European Commission to Hungary and the desire of Prime Minister Viktor Orban to receive funds from Brussels in a crisis. Bloomberg points out that such concessions could open Budapest access to $5.8 billion from EU funds.

According to the government’s decision, a working group will be created in Hungary to combat corruption and fraud and to prevent conflicts of interest and other violations. It will include representatives of state bodies and public organizations on a parity basis. The anti-corruption body may start working as early as November.

Another decision of Orban’s cabinet is related to the order to create a system of effective evaluation of public procurement, as well as to study the situation when the share of public procurement with one participant exceeds 15% of all. This will be handled by the Minister of Land Management Tibor Navraxis.

As Nepszava points out, the European Commission has long expressed concern about the situation with public procurement in Hungary, and the head of Orban’s administration, Gergei Goulash, recognized the legitimacy of Brussels’ claim on this issue.

In April, the European Commission launched a rule of law mechanism against Hungary. It allows Brussels to block the allocation of funds from the EU budget and funds to countries that, according to the union authorities, use them for other purposes. Hungary and Poland tried to challenge the implementation of the mechanism, but the EU court rejected their complaint.

Nepszava also associates the decision of the Hungarian government with Orban’s desire to agree on a plan to help Budapest and receive funds from the Economic Recovery Fund (RRF) from Brussels in conditions of “uncontrolled” inflation and the impending economic crisis. The support package consists of two parts – irrevocable financial assistance and concessional loans.

The Basmanny court invalidated the registration of the “New story newspaper” created by the journalists of the “New Newspaper”, the press service of the court told RBC.

“The Basmanny District Court of Moscow issued a decision that recognized the effective registration of the mass media of the magazine “New Story-newspaper”,” the court reported.

The day before, the court made a similar decision regarding the “New Newspaper”, which has been published since 1993. The editor-in-chief of “Novaya Gazeta”, Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov, said that the court’s decision was “insignificant, ordered, political”. According to him, it has no legal grounds.

On March 28, “Novaya Gazeta” suspended its publication after receiving two warnings from Roskomnadzor due to the lack of labeling of an NGO-foreign agent in the materials. The publication announced that it was stopping the release “until the end of the “special operation on the territory of Ukraine”. Some of the employees of the “New Newspaper” left for Europe, where they created a “New newspaper.” Europe, at the end of April, its website was blocked.

The publication announced the launch of a “New story newspaper” on July 15. “We are staying in Russia, where our audience is, and opening a new magazine. In short, it is called “BUT”, and in full “The New story-newspaper”,”the journalists reported then. The publication’s website was also launched, which a week later the Prosecutor General’s Office demanded to block “for discrediting”. What exactly it consisted of, the agency did not explain

Peskov called Ivan Safronov’s sentence harsh

WithAfronov received 22 years in a strict regime colony, the defense appealed the verdict. The journalist did not admit his guilt and twice refused a deal with the investigation

Peskov called Ivan Safronov's sentence harsh

Ivan Safronov

The Kremlin can state that the sentence of journalist Ivan Safronov is very harsh, but it cannot comment on the court’s decision, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on the RBC TV channel.

“This is a verdict of the court, and I have no right to comment on it in any way. Yes, we can state that this is a very harsh sentence, I have nothing more to say on this topic,” he said.

He added that the closed nature of the Safronov trial is due to the severity of the charges that were imputed to him.

The Moscow City Court on the eve sentenced Ivan Safronov, who was found guilty of treason, to 22 years in a strict regime colony. The journalist did not admit guilt in treason and linked his persecution with professional activity. The court also appointed Safronov two years of restriction of freedom and a fine of 500 thousand rubles.

Lawyer Dmitry Katchev called the sentence inadequate. Another lawyer of the journalist, Daniil Nikiforov, said that he would appeal the verdict in the appellate instance.

As lawyer Pavel Chikov explained, the sanction under Article 275 of the Criminal Code on treason provides for a maximum penalty of 20 years, but the court appointed Safronov more, since he is accused of two episodes. According to Chikov, the usual fork of terms for sentences in cases of treason was from six to nine years, whereas in the last five years sentences of up to 12–15 years have become frequent.

Safronov was detained on July 7, 2020, when he no longer worked as a journalist, but was an adviser to the head of Roscosmos. He was arrested on the same day. The investigation believes that Safronov collaborated with the special services of NATO countries, for which, in particular, he received $248 from political scientist Demuri Voronin (also accused of treason), lawyer Ivan Pavlov told RBC (recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent). The second episode is connected with the Czech intelligence agent Martin Safronov’s friend named by the investigationLarish. He worked in Moscow from 2010 to 2012 as a correspondent for the newspaper Lidové noviny, and then created a news agency that distributed a security information digest by subscription. Safronov also provided materials for this newsletter, the journalist said in an interview with Kommersant. The journalist stressed that he had no access to state secrets and collected information only from open sources.
