German Chancellor Angela Merkel, during a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, stated the need to preserve the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the launch of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

“We want gas transit through Ukraine to remain. And in the future, Ukraine will remain a gas transit country for us even if the construction of the Nord Stream-2 is completed, ” she said.

According to her, there are concerns on the part of Kiev on this issue, but the West takes them seriously. “We will discuss this topic. It will have an important role during my visit to the United States (July 14–16), since the United States also considers this issue essential, ” the Chancellor added.

She recalled that European countries have already negotiated for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to be preserved until 2024. “We promised this to Ukraine and we will stick to it. I care about sticking to my promises, and I think this applies to every next German chancellor, ” said Merkel, who will leave her post after the parliamentary elections in September.

The Nord Stream-2 project (the operator is Nord Stream 2 AG) involves the construction of two gas pipeline strands along the bottom of the Baltic Sea with a length of more than 1.2 thousand km each with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. m per year. They will supply gas to Germany through the maritime territories of Russia, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Now the pipeline is more than 90% complete. In total, about 5% of the gas pipeline remains to be completed, mainly in the waters of Denmark.

During the implementation of the project, the United States imposed two sets of sanctions against companies and ships involved in the construction of the Nord Stream-2. At the same time, Washington did not impose restrictions on Nord Stream 2 AG. US President Joe Biden has previously said that the construction of the pipeline is “almost complete” and the application of new measures would be “unproductive” for US relations with Europe.
