This is how he responded to the joint statement of the foreign ministers of these countries, which they issued following the results of the three-day summit (held from 12 to 14 May). In it, the heads of departments noted that they reject direct attempts to redraw the borders by force in violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of [Ukraine].

“Let’s put it mildly: our country does not care about the non-recognition of new borders by the G7, the true will of the people living there is important. Don’t forget the precedent of Kosovo, Western friends,” Medvedev wrote.

Western countries and Ukraine do not recognize the annexation of Crimea to Russia following the results of the 2014 referendum and the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), which were previously part of Ukraine. Russia recognized the latter as independent states, despite calls from Western countries to refrain from this decision.

Russia has been conducting a special military operation in Ukraine since February 24. Since then, delegations from both countries have repeatedly met both in person and online.

At the Ukrainian-Russian negotiations on the settlement of the crisis, Moscow is trying to get Kiev to recognize the peninsula as part of Russia, and the DPR and LPR as independent states. Ukraine rejects these ideas.

On the night of May 14, in an interview with Rai 1, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Kiev was ready to temporarily stop discussing the status of Crimea in order to return to this topic later. The head of state refused to recognize the autonomy of the LPR and the DPR.

Earlier, he said that Kiev would refuse to negotiate with Moscow if referendums were held in the territories controlled by Russian servicemen. The fact that the authorities can hold a vote on the issue of unification with Russia, in particular, was said by the head of the LNR Leonid Pasechnik. On May 11, this intention was expressed by the deputy head of the military-civil administration of the Kherson regionKirill Stremousov, which Russian troops have been controlling since March 15. The Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko in response said that the authorities would support any decision of the local population.
