«LitErs» will ask the authors to rewrite the texts because of the LGBT law

The service “LitErs” will withdraw from sale books that may fall under the new law banning LGBT propaganda, and recommend that authors rewrite the texts so that they can be returned for sale. Evgeny Selivanov, Director of the Content Development Department of the LitRes Group of Companies, told RBC about this.

He noted that according to the law, both the sales service and the copyright holders are responsible for violations. “LitRes” has already sent letters to copyright holders with a request to check their works for LGBT propaganda,” Selivanov explained and added that all books in which copyright holders confirm the presence of LGBT propaganda will be withdrawn from sale.

“In parallel, of course, we ourselves analyze books whose descriptions explicitly mention LGBT people in order to understand whether they pose a risk or not. Some works are already unavailable for purchase on “LitErs”. We also suggest that authors who may have LGBT propaganda in their books change the text tothe work could be returned for sale after improvements and subsequent moderation. If no response is received from the author, we will independently analyze the text and make a decision on the further sale of the book on the website,” the manager said. According to him, there are no more than 1% of the entire catalog of such books per liter.

Selivanov stressed that there are still no clear criteria by which the book can be attributed to works falling under the new law, but the company has consulted with lawyers and has already prepared an action plan in accordance with their recommendations.
