“After the current government came to power, Germany lost the last signs of independence,” Lavrov said.

Chancellor Scholz was criticized for hesitating for a long time when making a decision on the supply of heavy weapons to Ukraine. At the end of March, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky appealed to NATO countries to provide Ukraine with tanks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz postponed the final decision on their transfer. At the same time, Vice Chancellor Robert Habek and Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock insisted on the transfer of 100 tanks to Ukraine.
At the same time, other Western countries had already announced the transfer of heavy weapons to Kiev or began to supply them. In particular, the authorities of Canada and the Netherlands announced the supply of howitzers to Ukraine.

Scholz also stated that the country will not make any decisions under which NATO will take part in the conflict in Ukraine.
At the end of April, the lower house of the German parliament by a majority of votes supported a document calling on the government to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine. However, Scholz considered that Berlin should not make hasty decisions about sending heavy weapons to Ukraine. He noted that Germany will not supply Kiev with Western-made combat tanks until the United States and allies do so.
On May 9, Scholz said that Germany would still supply Ukraine with weapons and Russia forced his country to do so. «[Russian President Vladimir Putin] Putin leaves us no other choice,” he said. According to Scholz, the Russian leader has threatened peace in Europe, so Berlin is helping Kiev.
On May 17, Germany called for the early admission of Finland and Sweden to NATO. Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that this should be done without a transition period and Berlin will give these countries security guarantees. Earlier, Scholz himself spoke about the support of Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
Scholz became Chancellor of Germany on December 8, 2021, he headed the German government after the 16-year rule of Angela Merkel. Scholz’s candidacy was approved after a month and a half of coalition consultations. After the elections in September, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, which was led by Angela Merkel for many years, showed the worst result in history, gaining 24.1%voices. In the first place were the Social Democrats from the SPD, led by Scholz, with a result of 25.7%. The third place was taken by the Greens with a result of 14.8%, followed by the Free Democrats with 11.5%. The SPD, the Greens and the Free Democrats formed a coalition with Scholz at the head.
