Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with the YouTube channel “Solovyov Live”, said that NATO is a geopolitical project for the development of ownerless lands.

“NATO is now a purely geopolitical project to develop the territory that turned out to be ownerless after the disappearance of the Warsaw Pact and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. What are they doing,” the head of the Foreign Ministry said. According to him, Russia cannot be indifferent to the fact that NATO “swung at the threshold of our house”.

“Everything that was in our relations with the West during the disappearance of the USSR and the building of new relations, the President [of Russia Vladimir Putin] has said more than once, of course, it was a completely unprecedented level of trust, the level of desire to be friends, to become allies, as Vladimir Vladimirovich recalls periodically. But all this, we understand perfectly well, was a mistake. It is impossible to take these people’s word for it,” he believes.

The Minister noted that Russia does not put forward ultimatums, but the discussion of security guarantees with the West cannot be conducted indefinitely. “The main thing is, as the president said, so that there is no chatter, so that our proposals are not confused in an endless discussion, what the West is famous for and what it knows how to do,” Lavrov added.

The diplomat believes that Western countries are throwing a “tantrum” around Russia, but solid politicians such as Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden understand how to conduct an “adult conversation”. At the same time, Lavrov noted that “immature people” gathered in NATO, because the alliance, in parallel with the resumption of channels between Moscow and Washington, was cutting down channels of interaction.

According to him, the position taken by Western and NATO countries on Ukraine is rudeness. “They are being egged on by the Balts, Poles and Ukrainians, this is absolutely obvious. <..."They are pumping [Ukraine] with weapons, bragging that they have delivered $2.5 billion worth of ammunition and strike systems since 2014," the minister noted.

Lavrov did not rule out that Western countries want to provoke a “little war” in Ukraine and then blame Russia for everything in order to impose new sanctions against it in order to suppress it as a competitor.

Later, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the Kremlin considers important negotiations between Russia and NATO on security guarantees. “This is a very important negotiation track. Of course, the two projects – the draft treaty and the draft agreement – actually contain Russia’s initiatives related to the North Atlantic Alliance. Of course, it makes sense to use the track of bilateral Russian-American negotiations on this score, as well as the direction of negotiations between Russia and NATO,” the correspondent of RBC quotes Peskov.

On December 1, Putin said that Russia needs legal guarantees of non-expansion of NATO to the east. He discussed this topic with his American counterpart Joe Biden during an online summit on December 7. 10 days later, the Russian Foreign Ministry published its draft agreement on security guarantees. In particular, the Russian side proposed not to accept the countries that were part of the USSR into NATO and to abandon military activities on the territory of these states. It was also about Ukraine.

Washington promised to prepare a response list. In addition, the White House said that US allies in Europe should take part in negotiations on security guarantees. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pointed out that the alliance will not compromise on the issue of Ukraine’s accession and that it should choose its own path.
