The head of the German Defense Ministry, Boris Pistorius, who is on a visit to Kiev, in an interview with Bild newspaper spoke sharply against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Without hesitation and without compromise, the world would be better without Putin,” he said in an interview with the newspaper.

Pistorius also confirmed to the publication that by the end of March Ukraine will receive the first Leopard tanks from Germany. He said that he met with Ukrainian soldiers who went to Germany to learn how to use these machines. The minister, in response to a question about the supply of fighters or submarines to Kiev, said that this was not discussed in the negotiations. According to him, it is now more important to provide air defense, “this seems to be the number one priority for the next few months,” the head of the military department noted.

Speaking about whether Ukraine will be able to regain Crimea and Donbass, Pistorius said that this is a “difficult question and a look into a crystal ball”. He also refused to predict how Moscow and Kiev could come to start peace talks. Berlin will continue to support Kiev, the minister stressed this in an interview more than once.

Pistorius, who became head of the German Defense Ministry in January, came to Kiev for the first time. He met with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, the head of the country’s military department Alexei Reznikov, as well as the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitali Klitschko and his brother Vladimir.

Other Western politicians have previously made critical statements against Putin. For example, in March 2022, American leader Joe Biden called a Russian colleague a “war criminal”. The Kremlin considered that such rhetoric is “unacceptable and inexcusable”.
