China has overtaken the United States in the number of ballistic missile launchers

China has surpassed the United States in the number of land-based launchers of intercontinental missiles (ICBMs), the US military has notified Congress about this, writes The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

“The number of stationary and mobile land-based ICBM launchers in China exceeds the number of ICBM launchers in the United States,” the commander of the US Strategic Command told the relevant congressional committees on January 26.

However, in terms of the number of missiles and nuclear warheads on these missiles, the United States still surpasses China, the military said. According to officials, many of the Chinese launchers are empty, writes the WSJ. In addition, Washington does not take into account in this case its missiles, which are launched from submarines and bombers.

The newspaper points out that after the appearance of this information, the head of the Armed Forces Committee of the House of Representatives, Mike Rogers, said that Washington could not allow “parity” on ICBMs with Beijing, so it was time for the United States to “increase the capabilities to counter this threat”.

However, the number of such warheads is regulated by the treaty between Russia and the United States on strategic offensive Weapons (START-3). The contract expires in 2026. Both countries noted that it is necessary to start discussing a new document, but so far there are no active negotiations.

Moscow and Washington signed the START-3 treaty in 2010. According to it, the parties are obliged to reduce the number of deployed nuclear warheads to 1.5 thousand, and ICBMs, ballistic missiles on submarines and strategic bombers-missile carriers to 700.

According to the WSJ, supporters of arms control consider it necessary for the United States not to try to surpass the nuclear forces of China and Russia, but to continue the dialogue with the latter and try to negotiate with the PRC on the limitation of nuclear warheads.
