Businessman Roman Abramovich was not appointed an official representative from Russia in negotiations with the United States on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, a representative of the businessman told Forbes.

The telegram channel “Image of the Future” wrote that President Vladimir Putin gave Abramovich the status of an official representative of Russia in such negotiations by a closed decree.

“This is false information,” said a representative of the businessman.

Last spring, immediately after the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Moscow and Kiev held several rounds of settlement talks. Abramovich was present at the meeting of representatives of the two countries in Istanbul. He was not an official member of the Russian delegation, but participated in the negotiation process at the initial stage, the Kremlin said. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also said that the businessman is making efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Abramovich’s representative did not comment on his participation in the negotiation process.

Abramovich was among the Russian businessmen who did not fall under US sanctions (but fell under European and British ones). The Wall Street Journal in March last year, citing sources, wrote that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky advised Washington not to introduce them against the entrepreneur. He considered, the publication pointed out, that Abramovich could become a mediator in the negotiations.

The US authorities hoped that Abramovich’s mediation would help move on to meaningful negotiations with Russia, but now they are treating the businessman more and more ambiguously, the WSJ reported at the end of January. In a conversation with the publication, the adviser to the head of the office of the Ukrainian president, Mikhail Podolyak, expressed the opinion that Abramovich could play a role in some issues, but no longer as an intermediary.
