The Rosselkhoznadzor found brown moniliose rot (Moniliniafructicola) in fruits from Turkey, and a brown wrinkling virus in tomatoes, according to a statement on the agency’s website.

Representatives of the Rosselkhoznadzor discussed the supply of vegetables and fruits with employees of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey at a videoconference on September 23. The Russian side asked to strengthen phytosanitary control over the supplied products and recalled that the brown wrinkle virus found in Turkish tomatoes is a quarantine disease for Russia.

The Rosselkhoznadzor reported that it still records an increased level of pesticides in vegetables and fruits from Turkey. According to the ministry, in 2021, 79 cases of “exceeding the hygienic standards for the content of residual amounts of pesticides and agrochemicals” of imported products were detected.

Representatives of the Rosselkhoznadzor also announced their intention to strengthen control over GMO products and study Turkish legislation related to the cultivation of genetically modified plants.

In response, the representatives of Turkey reported that they are “attentive to the fulfillment of Russian requirements when exporting” and will do everything to prevent the export of dangerous products to Russia.

Reports of infected Turkish tomatoes appeared a few days before the meeting of the leaders of Russia and Turkey. Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan are expected to hold talks in Sochi on September 29. The Turkish president said that the situation in Syria and bilateral relations would be the topic of the talks, and important decisions would be made following the meeting.

The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov confirmed the fact of the meeting and said that in addition to the above, the leaders will discuss other regional conflicts. The Daily Sabah edition, citing its own source, reported that the main topic of the negotiations should be violations of the truce agreement in Idlib, which was signed by Putin and Erdogan in March 2020.

Earlier, on September 22, Erdogan, speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, said that Turkey stands for the preservation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine and will never recognize the annexation of the Crimea. Before that, on September 20, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that it did not recognize the results of the State Duma elections held in Crimea, as Ankara considers the annexation of the peninsula to Russia illegal. The Foreign Ministry stressed that the elections on the territory of the peninsula, held on September 17 and 19, have no legal force for Turkey.

The Kremlin called Turkey’s position on the elections in Crimea unacceptable, the Russian Foreign Ministry promised to draw appropriate conclusions.

Crimea became part of Russia after a referendum in 2014. 96% of the local residents who took part in the vote were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine and most Western countries did not recognize the results of the referendum and declared the annexation of Crimea. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the issue of the peninsula’s ownership is closed.
