The Pechersk Court of Kiev decided to elect the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform For Life Viktor Medvedchuk a preventive measure in the form of house arrest until December 7, UNIAN reports.

The prosecutor’s office demanded arrest or bail for him. “The judges refused the prosecutor’s office, which petitioned for the detention of Medvedchuk with the possibility of bail of UAH 1 billion (more than 2.7 billion rubles.—RBC)»,— writes the publication.

Medvedchuk was placed under house arrest on May 13. In July, the Pechersk Court extended it until September 7, and then until October 31. Medvedchuk and his colleague, Verkhovna Rada deputy Taras Kozak are suspected of treason (Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and violation of the laws and customs of war (Article 438 of the Criminal Code). They face life imprisonment.

According to the investigation, Medvedchuk and Kozak transmitted information representing state secrets to Russia and conducted anti-Ukrainian activities using Ukrainian citizens working in Russia. They also allegedly gave Moscow information about the development of the Glubokaya oil and gas field offshore near Feodosia, so that it would be easier to re-register it under Russian laws.

The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine arrested all of Medvedchuk’s property and imposed sanctions against the deputy. On August 4, the court granted the lawyers’ request for access to materials related to these restrictions.

On October 8, Medvedchuk was again accused of high treason and facilitating the activities of a terrorist organization. According to the SBU, Medvedchuk participated in a conspiracy against Ukraine, the purpose of which is to undermine the country’s energy security. The special service also stated that he helped disrupt coal supplies from abroad to Ukraine in order to organize illegal schemes for the supply of coal from Donbass instead.

The Opposition Platform called it part of the course on the falsification of criminal cases, the massacre of political opponents, the establishment of an absolute dictatorship [of Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky and his inner circle”.
