The exercises will work out the “confrontation between two coalitions of conditional states”
In the waters of the Sea of Japan, on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, large-scale military exercises with the participation of 10 thousand military personnel have started, according to the website of the Ministry of Defense.
“On the islands of Sakhalin, Iturup and Kunashir, as well as in the waters of the Sea of Japan, a bilateral exercise has started with formations and military units of the army Corps of the Eastern Military District, the forces of the Pacific Fleet,” the report says.
According to the press service, the exercises involve up to 500 units of military equipment, about 32 aircraft, 12 vessels of the Pacific Fleet.
During the exercises, the military will work out the use of an interspecific grouping of troops to ensure the military security of the country on the eastern borders. “The initial situation in the Far East is modeled, which is based on the confrontation between two coalitions of conditional states,” the ministry said.
The maneuvers in the island zone will take place in two stages within five days. The exercises are led by the acting Commander of the Air Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Sergey Sevryukov.
Earlier in June, large-scale exercises of the Pacific Fleet were held in the central Pacific Ocean. The exercise involved 20 surface warships, submarines and support vessels. In particular, the missile cruiser “Varyag”, the frigate “Marshal Shaposhnikov” and the ship of the measuring complex “Marshal Krylov” were involved. Also, about 20 aircraft took part in the exercise, including long-range anti-submarine aircraft Tu-142MZ and high-altitude fighter-interceptors MiG-31BM.
Within the framework of the exercises, the Pacific Fleet worked out the management of a heterogeneous grouping of forces at a considerable distance from the base points for the protection and defense of sea communications, as well as the interaction of ships and aircraft to track submarines and ship groups of the imaginary enemy.
