The Ministry of Defense has revealed the scale of the exercises near the Tajik-Afghan border

About 1 thousand Russian servicemen will take part in the trilateral tactical exercises in the south of Tajikistan, Interfax reports, citing the press service of the Central Military District.

The exercises “Harb-Maydon” will be held from August 5 to 10 near the border with Afghanistan, and military personnel from Uzbekistan will also take part in them. The maneuvers will take place in three stages. At the first stage, the combined group of troops of the three countries will prepare for an operation to destroy terrorists.

At the second stage, the elimination of militants who have crossed the border will be worked out, at the third-the destruction of a conditional enemy when crossing the border.

The Russian military contingent will be based on units of the 201st military base stationed in Tajikistan, including mountain motorized rifle, tank, artillery units, as well as special forces groups, radiation, chemical and biological protection specialists and mobile electronic warfare groups.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on the upcoming exercises at the “Harb-Maydon” training ground 20 km from the Afghan border on July 19. The joint development of military operations will take place against the background of the aggravation of the conflict in Afghanistan: after the withdrawal of US troops and their allies, the militants of the Taliban movement (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) launched a large-scale offensive and captured almost half of the country’s territory.

After fighting with the Taliban, Afghan government forces began to retreat to the territory of neighboring Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan. The flows of refugees also went there. Because of this, States had to strengthen their borders.

The militants now control the border region of Badakhshan in northern Afghanistan and a 900-kilometer section of the border with Tajikistan. In this regard, Moscow has strengthened its contingent at the 201st base.
