Russian troops and LPR forces took control of Severodonetsk (since 2014 it has been the regional center of the Luhansk region of Ukraine instead of Lugansk) at the end of May, the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov reported. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the residential quarters of the city “have been liberated”, but the Ukrainian military remain in industrial zones, including on the territory of the largest chemical plant in Ukraine “Nitrogen”.

Lysychansk is located southwest of Severodonetsk and remains the last major city within the borders of the Luhansk region of Ukraine that is not under the control of the LPR. The republic’s ambassador to Russia, Rodion Miroshnik, said earlier that the People’s Militia took control of the only road from Seversk, which is controlled by Kiev, to Lisichansk, cutting off 5-7 thousand Ukrainian military from supplies.
