Public competitions between the countries in who will give Ukraine the largest number of the best weapons interfere with the unity of the West, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes. His words are quoted by Reuters.
“What harms our unity is a public competition to surpass each other in areas: battle tanks, submarines, aircraft, who will demand more?Scholz noted, saying that Germany will not participate in this, because dissonance and speculation about a possible difference of opinion are beneficial to [Russian President Vladimir] To Putin.”
According to the German Chancellor, the Western countries strengthen unity by first making joint decisions on the supply of weapons in confidential negotiations, and then announcing them. He noted that this was the case in the case of sending tanks to Ukraine – German Leopard and American Abrams. Berlin and Washington announced plans to deliver them to Kiev on the same day.
Scholz added that in February, the European Union will introduce a new package of sanctions against Russia by the anniversary of the start of the military operation in Ukraine. The measures should become a clear signal that Moscow will not be able to implement its imperialist plans, Bloomberg quotes the Chancellor as saying.
The next, tenth package of sanctions, according to Bloomberg and Reuters, may include new restrictions on the Russian sector of drones and dual-use goods used in the military-industrial complex; restrictions against Russia’s nuclear sector; a ban on more “Russian propaganda media”; disconnection of the country’s new banks from SWIFT. InThe European Parliament proposed to impose restrictions against LUKOIL and Rosatom, to adopt a full embargo on the import of fossil fuels and uranium from Russia, to refuse to receive gas through the Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 pipelines.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, estimated the volume of the future package of sanctions at €10 billion.

Russia considers the sanctions illegal; Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the previous, ninth, package will cause socio-economic problems in the European Union itself.
