Since the beginning of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, many countries, including Germany, have revised their positions regarding the supply of lethal weapons to Kiev. So, at the end of February, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany would send weapons to Ukraine, including 1,000 anti-tank guns and 500 Stinger missiles.

Later, the German agency DPA, citing sources, reported that Germany had transferred to Ukraine 1.5 thousand portable anti-aircraft missile systems “Strela”, 100 MG3 machine guns, 8 million rounds of ammunition for firearms. It also became known about Berlin’s intention to supply Kiev with 2 thousand Panzerfaust anti-tank missiles.

Nevertheless, on April 19, Scholz said that the Bundeswehr had exhausted the limit of arms supplies for Ukraine from its reserves. At the same time, on April 28, the Bundestag by a majority of votes supported a document calling on the government to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine. Berbok has also repeatedly called for additional weapons to be supplied to Kiev.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized Western countries for “pumping” Ukraine with weapons and did not rule out that convoys with weapons could become targets for Russian attacks. The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov also pointed out that the supply of weapons to Kiev will not prevent Russia from achieving the goals of the special operation.

In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 22 that the partners “finally heard” Kiev and began to supply the weapons he requested.
