The visit to Moscow of the special representative of the US President on climate issues, John Kerry, is a positive signal for relations between the two countries. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in his opening speech before the talks with Kerry, the correspondent of RBC reports.

“I consider your visit an important and positive signal from the point of view of the development of bilateral relations, the removal of tensions in them and the establishment of professional substantive work in those areas where we can find common denominators,” the minister said.

According to him, Russia is ready to strengthen relations “on the basis of an equal and mutually beneficial dialogue, which is aimed at finding a balance of interests”. Lavrov added that Moscow expects close cooperation with Washington on climate issues.

Kerry, in turn, said that there are certainly differences between the countries on some issues, but the climate agenda should be discussed separately. “It is too important, too significant, we must work together,” he said.

Kerry arrived in Moscow on July 12. As previously reported by RBC sources, he will meet with the special representative of the President of Russia for relations with international organizations Anatoly Chubais and the special representative for climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriev. The representative of Edelgeriev noted that they plan to discuss the Paris Climate Agreement and the role of nuclear and hydrogen energy in ensuring the transition to low-carbon development.

On April 22–23, the international climate summit was held, it was organized in the format of a video conference. The event was initiated by US President Joe Biden, who invited the leaders of more than 40 countries, including Russia, to it.

Vladimir Putin, speaking at the summit, pointed out the need to unite the efforts of all countries in working on international projects to combat climate change. Biden praised Putin’s speech and called the summit “the beginning of a long journey”.
