FT learned about Western pressure on the UAE on sanctions against Russia

Western countries, led by the United States, are pushing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to stop exporting a number of critical electronic components to Russia, since Moscow can use them to create weapons systems. This is reported by the Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

According to them, in recent weeks, diplomats from the United States, the EU and the United Kingdom have visited the UAE to explain a wide range of their trade restrictions and put pressure on UAE officials to restrict exports to Russia.

Sources claim that the US is concerned about Abu Dhabi’s central role in supplying Moscow with critical goods, such as electronic components. Washington is particularly concerned about re-export, when Western goods are sent through the UAE bypassing restrictions, the FT interlocutors note.

According to the FT, the Western allies, in addition to the requirement to stop the export of electronic components, demand to disclose the list of goods that have already been delivered to Russia.

The Arab Emirates did not impose sanctions against Moscow, but opposed the special operation conducted by Russia and called on the parties to return to the negotiating table. The UAE also provides financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Earlier, Bloomberg wrote that the US authorities were putting pressure on Abu Dhabi because of trade with Russia. According to the agency, Washington warned the UAE authorities that their maintenance of economic and financial ties with Russia hinders Western efforts to put pressure on Moscow.
