The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, said in an interview with The Time that he respects Russian military institutions and keeps in his office the collected works of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, Valery Gerasimov.

According to Zaluzhny, he “grew up on the Russian military doctrine” and still believes that “all military science is in Russia”. The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that he studied with Gerasimov, who is 17 years older than him.

“I’ve read everything he’s ever written,” he’s the smartest of people, and my expectations from him were huge,” Zaluzhny added.

Zaluzhny is 49 years old. According to Time, after Crimea became part of Russia in 2014, he went from commanding a platoon to leading the troops of Ukraine in the east of the country. Zaluzhny “educated junior officers and encouraged more flexible decision-making” by transferring authority to commanders on the ground.

Zaluzhny became the head of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in June 2021, before that he was the commander of the troops of the operational command “North” for two years. He graduated from the National Academy of Defense of Ukraine, and in August 2017 received the rank of Major General, becoming one of the best officers of the armed forces of the country.

Time notes that unlike Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who was skeptical of intelligence reports about Russia’s intention to send troops into the country, Zaluzhny belonged to the officers who believed that the beginning of hostilities was a matter of time. According to the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on February 24, when the Russian military operation began, one of his goals was not to let Kiev fall.

In August, the Ukrainian edition of Telegraf reported that Zaluzhny could move to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and the AFU will be headed by the commander of the ground forces, Alexander Sirsky. This information has not been confirmed.
